Chapter 9 - The Descent into the Sub-Basement

The darkness in the interrogation room was absolute, heavy, and suffocating. The hum of the ventilation had died completely, leaving only the sound of heavy breathing and the distant, metallic clatter of an elevator shaft in motion.
"Agent Vance!" Elinor shrieked, panic finally overwhelming her aristocratic veneer. "Get those lights back on! Someone is cutting the power to the building!"
"Stay where you are!" Vance ordered, his voice tight with tension as he swept his flashlight across the room. The beam cut through the pitch black, illuminating floating dust motes and casting long, distorted shadows against the concrete walls.
The beam swept toward the doorway. The chair where Elena Vance had been standing moments before was completely empty.
"She's gone," Vance muttered, lowering his weapon slightly as realization hit him. "She vanished right through the secure perimeter."
Before Elinor could reply, the floor beneath them shuddered violently. A low, grinding groan vibrated through the foundation of the federal building, shaking dust from the ceiling tiles.
"What is happening?" Elinor demanded, grabbing the edge of the metal table to steady herself.
"The sub-basement elevator," Vance said, his radio finally crackling to life with a frantic burst of static. "Team One, report! We have an unauthorized override on shaft four! The transport van... the transport van has just been accessed from the inside!"
Vance pressed his radio mic to his mouth. "This is Agent Vance! Lock down all egress points! Seal the perimeter—"
He was cut off by a sharp, synthetic chime that echoed through every speaker in the facility.
System override complete. Transport protocol active.
Instantly, the wall-mounted emergency lights flickered back on, casting a harsh, sterile white glow across the room. The interrogation door, which had been securely bolted from the outside, slowly swung open.
Standing in the doorway was not a federal guard, nor was it Elena. It was a man in a crisp, unmarked black suit holding a ruggedized tablet. His face was entirely expressionless.
"Agent Vance. Mrs. Sterling," the man said, his voice flat and automated-sounding. "Your presence is requested downstairs. The transport is waiting."
Elinor backed away until her spine hit the concrete wall. "I am a citizen of the United States! I demand to see a federal judge! I demand my constitutional rights!"
"Your rights were transferred along with your assets at 8:05 PM," the man replied, stepping aside to reveal the empty, dimly lit hallway beyond. "Mrs. Vance sends her regards. She says the view from the top is much colder than expected."
Vance holstered his weapon, his expression dark and unreadable. He looked at Elinor, then at the open door. "Move, Mrs. Sterling. We're walking."
Elinor swallowed hard, her golden gown dragging heavily across the floor as she took a reluctant step forward. The bright white lights of the hallway seemed to stretch into infinity, leading downward, deeper into the bowels of the concrete fortress.
As they stepped past the threshold, the elevator doors at the end of the hall slid open automatically. Inside the car stood a single wooden crate, marked with a familiar shipping stamp: Sterling Logistics - Fragile - Handle with Care.
Resting on top of the crate was a child's small, bloodstained white shirt—the exact one little Leo had been wearing on the rooftop.
Elinor stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat as a cold drop of sweat rolled down her bruised, trembling neck.
Agent Vance reached out and pushed her gently into the elevator. As the heavy steel doors began to close, sealing them inside, the crate lid slowly creaked open from within.
