Chapter 6 - The Zurich Ghost and the Swiss Vaults

The metal door clicked shut behind Elena, leaving Elinor and Agent Vance alone once more in the stifling interrogation room. But the air had changed; it felt thinner, charged with an invisible static.

Elinor’s hands trembled against the cold table, her manicured nails digging into her palms until the skin whitened. "She shouldn't be here," Elinor snarled, her voice losing its aristocratic composure. "This is a secure federal facility! How did she just walk into an active interrogation room?"

Agent Vance didn't flinch. He slowly closed the manila folder, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the heavy metal door. "Mrs. Vance isn't just a civilian witness, Elinor. According to the decrypted mainframe logs we pulled from your corporate headquarters thirty minutes ago, she is listed as the primary legal proxy for Sterling Logistics' shadow tier."

Elinor let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "That's impossible! I founded this company! My family built this empire from the ground up while her husband was just a hired coder scratching lines of logic into a terminal!"

"Your husband bought the bricks, Elinor," Vance corrected quietly, leaning back in his chair. "But Arthur Vance laid the digital foundation. And when he discovered what you were using his algorithms for—smuggling contraband through humanitarian shipping lanes—you didn't just fire him. You engineered a tragedy."

"Prove it," Elinor hissed, though her voice lacked conviction. "A signed bank transfer means nothing without the decryption keys to the Zurich servers. And those keys are buried deep inside an offline, air-gapped vault in Switzerland that only my biometric signature can unlock."

Agent Vance smiled faintly, pulling a sleek, matte-black tablet from beneath the table. He tapped the screen twice and turned it toward her.

On the display, a live video feed showed a subterranean vault in Zurich. Rows of server racks hummed with blue LED lights. In the center of the room, a terminal screen displayed a flashing green progress bar at 99%.

Below the bar, a text prompt read: Biometric override accepted via proxy authentication: Elena Vance.

Elinor slammed her cuffed hands onto the table, the metallic crash echoing off the concrete walls. "That requires my DNA! My iris scan! My voice print!"

"Or," Vance said softly, "it requires the signature of someone whose genetic profile was spliced into the core architecture as a fail-safe by her husband before he died. Arthur knew what kind of monster you were, Elinor. He built Elena into his final line of defense."

The progress bar on the tablet hit 100%.

Across the room, the wall-mounted secure terminal suddenly beeped. A high-priority encrypted file began downloading directly from the Swiss vault onto the federal server.

Agent Vance watched the download speed climb, then looked back at Elinor with a chilling expression. "Congratulations, Mrs. Sterling. You just lost your empire, your freedom, and your offshore billions. But that's not even the worst part."

The download completed with a sharp chime, and a single audio file popped up on the screen, labeled: Final_Call_Sterling_02.wav.

Vance pressed play.

The tinny, unmistakable voice of Elinor’s dead husband echoed from the tablet's speakers, speaking words that made Elinor's blood turn directly to ice.
