Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass and the Silent War

The autumn wind whipped across the penthouse rooftop, carrying the bitter scent of ozone and exhaust from the sprawling city below.

Elinor Sterling lowered her crystal champagne glass, the golden liquid rippling beneath the ambient glow of neon signs and a lone American flag snapping in the chill. Her updo was an architectural marvel, and her diamonds caught the city lights like frozen fire.

At her feet, Elena Vance knelt on the cold concrete, her dark blue blazer dress stained with dust and crimson. In her arms, four-year-old Leo sobbed uncontrollably, burying his tear-streaked face into his mother’s shoulder.

Elena looked up, her face bruised and bloodied, her voice cutting through the wind with a chilling calmness. "Get her out of here. It's over for you."

Elinor’s lips curled into a cold, superior smile. She tilted her head, locking her pale eyes onto the battered woman. "Over, Elena? You are bleeding on my terrace, holding a frightened child, while I hold the keys to this entire city. You brought a plastic knife to a nuclear strike."

Elena tightened her grip around Leo, whispering soothingly into his dark hair before lifting her gaze. Tears shimmered in her eyes, but her voice was a steel blade. "You just made the biggest mistake of your life."

Elinor chuckled softly, a low, melodic sound of utter contempt. She raised her champagne glass in a mocking toast, taking a slow, deliberate sip as if savoring vintage poison.

Without breaking eye contact, Elena retrieved a shattered smartphone from her pocket. Her fingers, though trembling slightly from adrenaline, moved with terrifying precision across the cracked screen. She pressed the device to her ear, her voice dropping to a harsh, commanding whisper.

"Shut down all their locations in five minutes. Freeze every account."

For a fraction of a second, Elinor’s smirk faltered. She watched Elena’s unblinking eyes and felt a sudden, icy knot twist deep within her stomach.

Elena lowered the phone, her bruised face settling into a mask of pure, absolute finality.

Suddenly, Elinor’s phone buzzed violently in her evening clutch. She pulled it out, her fingers tapping the screen. Her eyes went wide, the color draining instantly from her face. The champagne glass slipped from her numb fingers, shattering into a thousand glittering shards on the concrete.

Before Elinor could scream, the glowing Manhattan skyline across the river went completely dark.
