Chapter 3 - The Men in Black and the Confiscated Keys

The stairwell door slammed against the brick wall as half a dozen armed federal agents flooded the rooftop. Their black tactical gear bore no insignia, but the gold badges flashed briefly beneath the emergency strobe lights that had just kicked on across the helipad.

"Elinor Sterling!" the lead agent barked, his voice echoing over the howling wind. "Step away from the ledge and keep your hands where we can see them!"

Elinor spun around, her high heels wobbling on the glass-littered concrete. Her composure, usually unbreakable, fractured completely under the weight of the red laser sights painting her shimmering gold gown. "Do you know who I am?" she shrieked, her voice losing its aristocratic polish. "I am the primary donor to the mayor's reelection campaign! My husband dines with senators!"

"Your husband is currently answering questions in a federal holding cell in lower Manhattan," the agent replied coldly, stepping forward and clamping heavy steel cuffs around her wrists. The diamonds on her fingers scraped against the cold metal. "And your assets have been frozen under the National Security and Anti-Corruption Act."

Elinor’s breath hitched. She twisted her head desperately toward the stairwell, hoping to spot Elena, but the exit was empty. The bruised woman and her young boy had vanished into the labyrinth of the dying skyscraper as if they were ghosts.

"This is a coup," Elinor hissed, her face contorting with rage as she was shoved toward the elevator bank. "Elena Vance is a criminal! She hacked my systems! She forged those documents!"

"Mrs. Vance walked into our Manhattan field office three hours ago with physical hard drives, signed bank transfers, and audio recordings of your voice authorizing the destruction of her husband's research lab," the agent stated matter-of-factly, pressing the down button. "She didn't hack anything, Elinor. She simply handed us the key to your vault."

The elevator doors slid open, revealing a sterile, harshly lit interior. As Elinor was forced inside, she caught a glimpse of her reflection in the polished steel doors. The golden gown looked absurd against the handcuffs.

The agent reached out to press the basement level, but before his finger touched the panel, every floor button lit up in a blinding red cascade. The elevator car violently jolted, plunging three stories before screeching to a halt with a sickening metallic groan.

The lights inside the cabin blinked out, leaving them in absolute, suffocating darkness.

Through the intercom speaker, a distorted, mechanical voice whispered softly: "Welcome to the basement, Elinor."
