Chapter 7 - The Voice from the Grave

The tinny audio file filled the tiny interrogation room with a sound that felt more like a physical blow than mere words.

"Elinor," the recorded voice of David Sterling rasped from the tablet speaker, carrying a heavy, haunted resonance. "If you are hearing this, it means the Zurich vault has been breached, and my wife has finally collected the debt you owe us."

Elinor gripped the edge of the metal table, her knuckles turning bone-white. Her breath hitched in her throat, her eyes darting frantically toward the one-way observation mirror. "Turn it off," she whispered, her voice trembling with genuine terror for the first time in decades. "Turn that damn thing off right now!"

Agent Vance sat motionless, letting the audio play out.

"You thought buying off the local police and staging that bridge accident would bury the truth," David’s voice continued, cold and steady. "You thought you could erase my research and take full credit for the global logistics network. But you forgot one fundamental rule of programming, Elinor: every system has a backdoor, and every creator leaves a legacy."

The recording paused for a heavy, agonizing second, filled with the faint sound of wind and rushing water—the exact acoustic signature of the George Washington Bridge on the night of his supposed "accident."

"Elena is holding the master ledger right now," the voice finished. "And the federal marshals are listening. Goodbye, my love. Enjoy the fall."

The audio cut out with a sharp click.

The interrogation room fell into a silence so absolute that the hum of the fluorescent lights sounded like a distant jet engine.

Elinor slumped back in her chair, the golden gown draped over her shaking frame like a shroud. Her carefully constructed universe of wealth, power, and untouchable immunity had evaporated in less than an hour. She looked up at Agent Vance, her eyes wide, glassy, and hollow.

"She used me," Elinor murmured, a hysterical edge creeping into her tone. "She let me build the empire. She let me funnel the money, take the risks, sign the illegal manifests... she used me as a sponge to absorb all the liability while her husband built the trap."

"No, Elinor," Agent Vance said, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "You built a house of cards on top of a fault line. Elena just waited for the right moment to stomp her foot."

Before Vance could reach the door, the overhead lights flickered violently and died, plunging the room into total darkness once more.

A red emergency strobe kicked on, casting rhythmic, bloody pulses across the concrete walls.

From the hallway outside, the sound of slow, deliberate footsteps echoed on the linoleum floor. Click, clack. Click, clack.

The heavy steel door slowly swung open on its ungreased hinges.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the harsh red strobe light, was Elena Vance. She was no longer holding Leo; her hands were empty, relaxed, and resting calmly at her sides. Her bruised face bore a quiet, terrible smile.

"The federal server is clean, Agent Vance," Elena said, her voice smooth and devoid of all emotion. She stepped into the room, her dark blue dress catching the red light like spilled blood. She locked her dark eyes onto Elinor. "And the international arrest warrants for corporate homicide have just been issued in twelve countries."

Elinor shrunk back against her chair, her voice a desperate, raspy squeak. "What do you want from me, Elena? You've taken everything! You have the money, the empire, the assets! What more could you possibly want?"

Elena stopped just an inch from the metal table, leaning down until her bruised face was mere inches from Elinor's terrified eyes.

"I want your signature on one final document," Elena whispered softly. "The surrender of your soul."
