Chapter 13 - The Closing of the Iron Gates

The automated typewriter hummed softly in the cavernous server room, its metallic keys still warm from printing the devastating confession. The single sheet of paper rested heavily in Elinor’s lap, its dark black text screaming up at her like a death warrant.
Elinor’s trembling fingers hovered over the blank signature line at the bottom of the page. Her shimmering gold gown, now torn and stained, felt less like a symbol of wealth and more like a heavy shroud.
"I won't do it," Elinor whispered, her voice cracking as she shoved the paper away, sending it fluttering to the concrete floor. "I won't sign my own execution order. You can't force me without legal counsel present!"
The federal prosecutor seated behind the mahogany desk didn't blink. He calmly closed his leather-bound folder and looked toward the armed guards stationed by the entrance.
"Counsel was offered, Mrs. Sterling, and refused by your own obstruction," the prosecutor stated evenly. "Marshal, escort her to Transport Unit Three. The district court is waiting."
The two federal marshals stepped forward instantly, grabbing Elinor by her bruised arms and hoisting her to her feet with practiced efficiency.
"No! Let go of me!" Elinor shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into frantic, animalistic panic. She thrashed against their grip, her manicured nails scraping uselessly against their tactical vests. "You can't do this! I am Elinor Sterling! I built this city's foundation!"
"You built a prison, Elinor," Elena Vance said quietly, stepping out from the blue glow of the server racks. Her dark blue blazer dress remained pristine, her posture unyielding. "And now you're just moving into the permanent cell."
Elinor glared at Elena, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You think you've won, don't you? You think destroying my empire brings your husband back? He's still dead, Elena! He's in the cold ground, and no amount of code or federal custody will ever change that!"
For a fleeting second, a shadow of profound grief crossed Elena’s bruised face, but it was instantly replaced by an unshakeable, terrifying resolve.
"David didn't die in vain, Elinor," Elena replied steadily. "His open-source logistics network went live across the nation an hour ago. Every hospital, every school, every community pantry that your monopoly starved is now receiving free, unrestricted supplies. His legacy is feeding the world while yours is rotting in a federal holding cell."
Elinor let out a harsh, defeated sob, her knees buckling under her weight. The marshals caught her effortlessly, dragging her backward toward the massive iron security gates at the rear of the server room.
