Chapter 9 - The Digital Duel

The red warning box on the laptop screen flashed frantically, the progress bar for the state board upload crawling sluggishly at seventy-two percent. Outside the greenhouse, the hum of the security cart grew louder, stopping abruptly just outside the wooden sliding door. Heavy boots crunched on the gravel walk. Someone was shining a high-intensity flashlight directly through the translucent glass walls, casting long, wavering shadows of the tropical plants across the floor.

“Clara, they’re outside,” Arthur hissed, grabbing the heavy metal wrench once more and stepping cautiously toward the door.

“Hold on! Eighty-five percent!” Clara cried, her face bathed in the harsh red light of the error warnings. Beads of sweat dripped down her forehead as her fingers danced across the keys, manually rewriting the routing scripts to bypass the firewall’s active counter-measures.

The sliding door handle rattled violently. Someone was trying to force the lock from the outside.

“Open this door immediately! This is Principal Harrison!” a muffled, authoritative voice boomed through the glass panel.

Arthur planted his shoulder against the wooden frame, bracing himself for the inevitable breach. He knew that the moment they broke the lock, it would all be over. They would confiscate the laptop, destroy the drive, and ensure that both he and Clara were permanently silenced, branded as unstable rabble-rousers.

“Ninety-four percent!” Clara shouted over the rattling door.

Suddenly, the glass pane near the top of the door shattered inward with a sharp crash. A gloved hand reached through the broken opening, fumbling blindly for the interior deadbolt.

Arthur didn't hesitate. He swung the wrench with a controlled, precise arc, striking the wooden frame right beside the reaching hand. The intruder yelled in surprise and yanked their arm back out of the greenhouse.

“Ninety-nine percent!” Clara gasped.

With a final, triumphant chime, a small green checkmark appeared on the screen, accompanied by the text: ‘Upload Complete. Master Archive Dispatched to State Board of Education and Federal Oversight Committee.’

Before Harrison could smash the rest of the glass, Clara slammed the laptop lid shut, ripping the USB adapter out of the port and shoving it deep into her pocket.

“It’s done,” she whispered, her eyes shining with fierce satisfaction.

At that exact moment, the entire greenhouse door was kicked off its hinges, crashing heavily to the ground as Principal Harrison and two massive security guards swarmed inside.
