Chapter 12 - The Hidden Sub-Folder

Arthur pulled his smartphone out of his pocket, frowning as he stared at the screen. The notification wasn't from the police or the news outlets; it was an automated decryption receipt from the local cloud archive, indicating that a hidden sub-folder—one he hadn't even noticed during the chaotic data grab—had just finished processing its own background extraction.

He tapped the notification open. A single PDF document appeared on the screen, titled: ‘Project_Goliath_Financial_Audit_2024.pdf’.

Lieutenant Miller, who was currently escorting a handcuffed Principal Harrison toward the exit, noticed Arthur’s sudden change in expression and paused at the doorway.

“Is there a problem, Mr. Evans?” the lieutenant asked, his tone cautious.

“I thought we had everything,” Arthur replied, his eyes scanning the endless rows of figures and corporate entity names listed inside the document. “The test cheating, the grade alterations, the scholarship fraud—that was just a smokescreen. Look at this.”

He turned the phone screen toward the officer. Lieutenant Miller squinted at the glowing display, reading the bolded header text at the top of the page. It wasn't just a local school district corruption scheme. It was a massive, multi-million-dollar embezzlement network funneling state educational grants through shell companies managed directly by the district superintendent and three prominent real estate developers in the county—including Evelyn Vance’s husband.

Evelyn stopped dead in her tracks, her head snapping around to stare at Arthur with an expression of pure, unadulterated terror. The grade rigging and test cheating were merely petty misdemeanors designed to protect rich kids; this new document exposed a felony-level racketeering operation that would bring down half the political elite in the state.

“Where did you get this?” Evelyn demanded, lunging forward before the officers could restrain her, her composure completely shattered. “That file was encrypted on a secure server! You shouldn't have access to that!”

“Your husband forgot to delete the local audit logs when he updated the firewall last month,” Arthur said coldly, slipping the phone back into his pocket. “He thought he was hiding his tracks. He was just building a permanent digital paper trail.”

Lieutenant Miller signaled the responding deputies immediately. “Call the state attorney general’s office right now. Tell them we don’t just have a corrupt principal; we’ve stumbled straight into a state-wide embezzlement ring.”

As the officers rushed to secure the new perimeter, Clara looked up at Arthur with wide, astonished eyes. But before anyone could process the full implications of the discovery, a blinding flash of light exploded from the end of the greenhouse hallway, accompanied by the distinct sound of breaking glass.
