Chapter 11 - The Arrival of Law Enforcement

The sliding glass door of the greenhouse was pushed wide open, not by school security, but by two uniformed police officers wearing standard tactical vests and carrying official department notebooks. The flashing red and blue lights from the cruisers parked outside painted the tropical plants and glass walls in a chaotic, urgent strobe effect.
“Principal Harrison? Evelyn Vance?” the lead officer asked, stepping into the humid room with an authoritative stride. “I’m Lieutenant Miller, county precinct. We received an automated cyber-fraud alert originating from this sector, accompanied by multiple witness affidavits regarding physical assault and institutional tampering.”
Principal Harrison instinctively straightened his tie, attempting to regain his corporate composure despite the glaring failure surrounding him. “Officer, there’s been a severe misunderstanding. This is a private internal disciplinary matter being handled according to school district protocol. These individuals are trespassing and—"
“Shut your mouth, Harrison,” Lieutenant Miller interrupted sharply, holding up a tablet displaying the verified header data of the uploaded archive. “We have matching digital signatures, authenticated student testimonies, and verified medical records of physical abuse spanning the last three semesters. You are both being detained for questioning regarding systemic fraud, extortion, and assault.”
The two security guards flanking Harrison slowly backed away, dropping their hands to their sides and signaling silently that they wanted no part in obstructing federal law enforcement.
Evelyn Vance stood frozen in place, her dark blue blazer suddenly looking less like a symbol of authority and more like a straitjacket. She looked toward the greenhouse entrance, hoping to catch a glimpse of her son, Julian, but the boy was nowhere to be found. He had long since fled the campus the moment the digital network went down.
“You can’t do this,” Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking for the first time. “My husband—the funding committee—you have no idea who you're dealing with.”
“Ma’am, your husband’s office was the first place our financial crimes division raided ten minutes ago,” Lieutenant Miller replied coldly, gesturing to the officers behind him. “Step away from the desk, please. Put your hands behind your back.”
Arthur let out a long, shuddering breath, the immense weight of the past few hours finally lifting from his shoulders. He lowered the metal wrench and set it gently down on the potting bench.
Clara looked up at him, a small, genuine smile breaking through her exhausted face. She reached out and closed her laptop lid, her bandaged hand resting safely on top of it.

As the officers moved in to snap the cold steel cuffs around Evelyn Vance’s wrists, a sudden, sharp alert tone pinged loudly from Arthur’s smartphone in his breast pocket.
