Chapter 1 - The First Crack

The air inside room 302 felt entirely suffocated by the heavy afternoon heat and the unspoken tension hanging over every desk. Mrs. Vance stood rigidly over Clara’s desk, her posture unyielding, her dark blue blazer sharp against the faded light. Clara kept her head down, long brown hair shielding the fresh red welt blooming across her knuckles from the wooden pointer.
“Why didn't you let him copy your test?” Mrs. Vance demanded, her voice cutting through the silent room with a chilling, personal edge.
Clara bit her lower lip, trembling slightly but refusing to look up.
Before the girl could force a whisper out, Leo slammed his hands against his desk behind her and surged to his feet, his blue zip-up hoodie rustling violently as he shook with righteous fury.
“Because he's your son!” Leo shouted, his voice cracking slightly with adolescent rage. “So we're supposed to let him cheat just because you refuse to fail your golden boy?”
Mrs. Vance’s jaw tightened sharply, her eyes flashing with sudden, cold malice.
Without breaking eye contact with Leo, she raised the wooden pointer stick again and struck Clara’s desk with a sharp, echoing crack, making the terrified girl flinch back instinctively.
“Watch your tone, Leo,” Mrs. Vance hissed, stepping away from Clara and turning her full, intimidating gaze toward the defiant boy. “You have no idea what is at stake here.”
Leo didn't back down. Instead, his eyes darted upward toward the humming grey dome of the security camera mounted high in the corner of the ceiling.
Before Mrs. Vance could process his intent, Leo bolted from his aisle, sprinting across the linoleum floor and leaping upward, his fingers desperately grabbing the plastic casing of the lens to twist it violently out of alignment.
