Chapter 7 - The Greenhouse Sanctuary

The heavy glass door of the school greenhouse burst open with a muffled crash as Arthur tumbled inside, gasping for breath and slamming the latch behind him. The humid, tropical air hit him like a physical wall, thick with the earthy scent of wet soil, blossoming orchids, and overgrown ferns that stretched toward the translucent polycarbonate roof overhead.

The greenhouse was tucked into a secluded nook between the science labs and the athletic field, completely isolated from the main foot traffic of the campus. It was an abandoned project, long since forgotten by the janitorial staff, making it the perfect temporary sanctuary.

Arthur leaned heavily against a wooden potting bench, clutching his side as he tried to regulate his breathing. The footsteps in the tunnel had faded away, redirected by a false trail he had left near the boiler room junction. He was safe for the moment, but he was trapped in a dead end.

A soft rustling sound came from the dense cluster of banana trees near the back wall. Arthur froze, slowly reaching into his jacket for the heavy metal wrench he had picked up earlier.

“Put the wrench down, Mr. Evans. I’m not here to hurt you,” a quiet, trembling voice said.

A figure stepped out from the shadows of the drooping foliage. It was Clara. She was still wearing her dark blue school blazer, though the crest patch was slightly askew, and her right hand was wrapped neatly in a clean white medical bandage.

Arthur lowered the wrench slowly, sheer disbelief washing over his face. “Clara? What on earth are you doing here? How did you get out of Room 302?”

“Mrs. Vance dismissed us early after the security alert,” Clara explained, stepping closer into the faint moonlight filtering through the greenhouse roof. Her eyes were red-rimmed, but her gaze was fierce and steady. “She thought sending everyone home would stop the rumors. She didn't know I slipped out through the chemistry lab storage room instead of heading for the front gates.”

Arthur stared at the brave young girl, realizing the immense risk she had taken just to find him. “You shouldn't have come looking for me, Clara. It’s too dangerous. Harrison and Evelyn will suspend you permanently if they catch you down here with me.”

“They already suspended Leo,” Clara said, her voice cracking slightly with suppressed anger. “And they’re threatening to invalidate my entire academic record if I don't sign a confession stating I cheated on the test and tried to frame Julian.”

Arthur’s blood ran cold. The sheer scale of their cruelty knew no bounds. He pulled the solid-state drive out of his pocket and held it out toward her.

“This has everything,” Arthur said grimly. “Every altered grade, every bought scholarship, every suppressed complaint for the last three years. But we need a way to upload it to the state board of education before Harrison wipes the cloud backup.”

Clara looked at the drive, then reached into her blazer pocket and pulled out an old, beat-up laptop covered in sci-fi stickers. “My dad’s old satellite uplink terminal,” she whispered. “It bypasses the school’s firewall completely.”
