Chapter 5 - The Flash Drive Gamble

Arthur clutched the hot solid-state drive tightly against his chest, backing away until his spine hit the cold concrete wall of the server room. The red warning lights from the mutilated server racks cast long, jagged shadows across the floor, painting the tense confrontation in an eerie, cinematic crimson.

“You can’t bury this, Harrison,” Arthur said, his voice hard despite the adrenaline surging through his veins. “I already mirrored the master database to an encrypted cloud node off-site. If anything happens to me, or to those kids upstairs, the entire district board gets the raw footage within sixty seconds.”

Principal Harrison froze mid-step, his hand hovering in the air. For a fraction of a second, genuine panic flickered across the administrator’s carefully cultivated mask of corporate authority. He exchanged a brief, calculating glance with the two guards flanking him, weighing the risks of a physical struggle against the absolute devastation of an exposed systemic scandal.

“You’re throwing your life away for a couple of ungrateful kids who won't even remember your name by graduation,” Harrison spat, lowering his hand slowly. “Evelyn Vance is untouchable, Arthur. You know it, and I know it. Her husband sits on the state funding committee. If this school loses its accreditation because of a rigged test, hundreds of students lose their futures—not just her son.”

“That’s a twisted excuse for corruption,” Arthur shot back, his eyes darting toward the open access vent on the ceiling overhead. It was a tight squeeze, but it led directly to the maintenance tunnel network running beneath the entire campus.

Without waiting for Harrison to reply, Arthur hurled a heavy metal wrench directly into the overhead fluorescent light fixture. The bulbs shattered with a deafening pop, plunging the basement into absolute darkness.

In the sudden pitch black, shouts of surprise echoed off the concrete walls. Arthur scrambled upward, grabbing the edge of the metal ductwork and hoisting himself inside just as a pair of heavy hands grazed the ankles of his trousers. He kicked backward blindly, connecting with a solid thud, and then wriggled deep into the narrow, dusty metal tube, pulling the access grate shut behind him.

Back in Room 302, Mrs. Vance’s phone buzzed violently in her pocket. She pulled it out, glanced at the encrypted message flashing on the screen, and her face went completely pale.
