Chapter 3 - The Basement Door

The heavy metal door of the basement security office shook violently as someone rattled the locked handle from the outside. Arthur dropped the phone receiver back onto its cradle, his breath catching in his throat. He had locked the deadbolt the moment he saw Leo tamper with the camera, realizing that Evelyn's administrative reach extended far deeper into the school's infrastructure than he had ever feared.

“Open the door, Arthur. I know you’re in there,” a sharp, distorted voice called through the reinforced steel grate of the ventilation panel. It wasn’t Evelyn. It was Principal Harrison himself, his tone dripping with corporate coldness and veiled threats.

Arthur looked back at his multi-monitor setup. On the secondary screen, a backdoor diagnostic feed—completely independent of the main security network—was still blinking with a faint, low-resolution grayscale image. It was a wide-angle lens mounted inside the HVAC intake vent directly above Room 302. He could still see them. He could see Clara huddled over her desk, nursing her bruised hand. He could see Julian smirking in the front row, completely immune to the chaos around him.

“I’m not opening anything until the board reviews the logs, Harrison,” Arthur shouted back, his voice steady despite the sheer terror gripping his chest. “I saw what she did with the pointer. I saw the grading discrepancy.”

Outside the heavy door, footsteps shuffled. A low murmur of voices exchanged hurried instructions before a heavy mechanical thud echoed against the frame. They were bringing a crowbar.

Arthur scrambled out of his ergonomic chair, his eyes scanning the dense mess of cables, hard drives, and archive boxes piled high against the concrete walls. There had to be a physical backup. The school district mandated dual-layer retention for all disciplinary records, specifically to prevent administrative tampering. If he could rip the primary solid-state drive out of the central server tower before they breached the door, he could walk out of this building with irrefutable evidence.

With shaking hands, Arthur grabbed a Phillips-head screwdriver from a cluttered workbench and threw himself at the back panel of the main rack. Sparks flew as his screwdriver slipped against a live terminal, illuminating the dark room in a brief, blinding flash of blue light.

On the hidden HVAC monitor, the classroom door swung open, and two burly campus security guards stepped into Room 302, their heavy boots thudding against the floor as they moved directly toward Leo and Clara.
