Chapter 7 - Sanctuary and Shadows

The grand drawing room of the Sterling estate was a cavernous space filled with dark mahogany furniture, ancestral oil paintings, and heavy velvet drapes that filtered the harsh afternoon light into a soft, amber glow. Clara lay flat on the plush velvet sofa, her breathing shallow and erratic as Doctor Harrison monitored her vitals with a portable digital screen.
Eleanor stood near the marble fireplace, carefully removing her pearl crown and placing it on the mantle. The glittering pearls were smudged with a faint trace of dust from the lawn. She looked down at her hands, noticing for the first time that her fingernails were stained with a tiny speck of Clara’s blood from when she had grabbed her hand outside.
"She’s stabilizing," Doctor Harrison announced quietly, looking up from the blood pressure cuff. "The relaxant worked just in time. The contractions are spacing out. She and the baby are going to make it through the afternoon."
Clara let out a long, shuddering sigh, her eyes fluttering open as she stared up at the high molded ceiling. "Why did you save me, Eleanor?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the ticking grandfather clock in the corner. "You had every reason to let Julian destroy us both."
Eleanor walked slowly back across the Persian rug, stopping beside the sofa. She looked down at the younger woman, her expression softening just a fraction. "Julian didn't just betray me with you, Clara. He betrayed my trust by treating both of us as disposable commodities in his game of greed. I didn't save you for him. I saved you because an innocent child shouldn't pay the price for a sociopath's sins."
Before Clara could reply, the heavy oak door of the drawing room creaked open. Mr. Sterling stepped inside, holding a printed document covered in financial schematics. His face was paler than before, his shoulders carrying the weight of a staggering realization.
"Eleanor, Clara," Mr. Sterling said grimly, closing the door firmly behind him. "I just got off the phone with the federal prosecutor. The asset location text that popped up on Clara's phone a few minutes ago? It wasn't a mistake from Julian’s lawyer."
Eleanor frowned, stepping closer to her father. "What are you talking about?"

"Julian didn't just steal from our foundation," Mr. Sterling said, laying the document down on the mahogany coffee table. "He used Clara’s legal identity to secure a secondary, high-risk mortgage on a property neither of you knew existed—a safe house in the city containing documents linking our family corporation to an illegal arms syndicate."
