Chapter 12 - The Blade Returns

"Don't move a muscle, princess," a gravelly voice hissed in her ear, reeking of cheap whiskey and heavy sweat.

Eleanor’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her facial expression remained eerily composed. She closed her eyes for a split second, feeling the cold steel of the gun barrel biting into her skin, and remembered the weight of the wedding knife she had left back at the mansion. She didn't panic. Panic was a luxury for the unprepared.

From behind the shipping container, a sudden clatter echoed across the pavement as a medical supply case fell from the open door of the armored Mercedes, where Clara had desperately tried to operate the vehicle's external PA system to create a distraction.

"What was that?" the second tactical mercenary shouted in German from near the utility van, abandoning his post and rushing toward the noise with a drawn assault rifle.

The mercenary holding Eleanor tightened his grip, shifting his weight as he turned his head to look toward the commotion. That microscopic hesitation was all the opening Eleanor needed.

Drawing on years of elite self-defense training that Julian had foolishly assumed she never utilized, Eleanor slammed her heel down hard onto the mercenary’s instep, simultaneously driving her elbow backward into his solar plexus. The man grunted in agony, his grip slackening instantly as the wind was forced violently from his lungs.

Eleanor spun around, grabbing the heavy tactical flashlight from her belt and bringing it down with crushing force across the bridge of his nose. The mercenary collapsed onto the gravel, unconscious before he even hit the ground.

Without pausing to catch her breath, Eleanor sprinted the remaining twenty yards toward the loading dock where Clara’s phone and the digital override tablet rested on a wooden crate near the open side entrance of the burning warehouse.

Inside the burning structure, flames were already consuming the server racks, but the central master terminal—housed in a heavy-duty titanium vault—remained miraculously intact behind a thick glass partition.

Clara had managed to drag herself out of the armored car, using the side of the vehicle for support as she limped toward the loading dock, holding her breath against the thick black smoke. She reached the crate just as Eleanor arrived, her trembling fingers pressing firmly onto the biometric scanner built into the override tablet.

Access Granted, the tablet flashed in bright green text.

With a loud pneumatic hiss, the titanium vault door swung open, revealing the pristine master hard drives and physical paper ledgers detailing Julian’s entire criminal enterprise.
