Chapter 13 - The Final Vault

The heat inside the loading bay was suffocating, the roaring flames casting dancing orange shadows against the blackened brick walls. Clara coughed violently, leaning heavily against Eleanor’s shoulder as they both reached into the open titanium vault, grabbing the heavy paper ledgers and the compact master hard drives.
"I’ve got them," Eleanor said, shoving the hard drives into the waterproof pouch strapped securely around her waist. "We need to move—now! The structural integrity of this roof is failing."
Before they could turn toward the exit, the second mercenary burst back through the smoke, his assault rifle raised and pointing directly at Clara’s chest. His face was twisted into a snarl of pure rage, blood dripping from a cut above his left eyebrow where Clara had apparently struck him with the medical case earlier.
"Drop the drives, or I’ll blow your pregnant friend into pieces right here in the ash," the mercenary barked, his finger twitching nervously against the trigger.
Eleanor didn't hesitate. She didn't plead. With blinding speed, she reached into her tactical belt and pulled out a heavy metal wrench she had picked up from the maintenance station, hurling it directly at the mercenary’s face.
The wrench struck him square in the shoulder, throwing off his aim just enough for the first rifle shot to shatter a concrete pillar overhead, showering them in a cascade of sharp stone fragments.
Before the mercenary could recover his aim, the heavy metal roof beams above them groaned loudly, snapping under the intense heat. With a deafening crash, a massive section of the burning ceiling collapsed directly between the mercenary and the two women, a wall of fire and falling debris cutting off his path entirely.
"Go! Move!" Eleanor shouted, grabbing Clara around the waist and half-carrying her toward the exterior loading dock doors where the armored Mercedes idled with its doors wide open.
Doctor Harrison rushed out from the back seat, meeting them halfway through the smoke and hauling Clara safely into the vehicle while Eleanor threw the heavy hard drives and ledgers onto the floorboards.
"Drive! Floor it!" Eleanor yelled as she slammed the armored door shut behind her, collapsing into the passenger seat as the entire warehouse behind them imploded in a magnificent, roaring wall of fire.

The armored Mercedes surged forward into the night, leaving the burning ruin and the criminal empire behind them in the rearview mirror.
