Chapter 11 - The Inferno at Zone Four

The armored Mercedes screeched to a halt around the final corner of the industrial park, its heavy headlights cutting through thick plumes of gray smoke billowing into the evening sky. Ahead of them, Warehouse 404—a cavernous corrugated steel structure—was rapidly succumbing to a massive, raging fire that licked hungrily out of the shattered second-story windows.

"We're too late," the driver muttered, gripping the steering wheel as glowing embers rained down onto the asphalt driveway.

"We are right on time," Eleanor countered, unbuckling her seatbelt with swift precision. She popped open the glove compartment, revealing a heavy-duty tactical flashlight and a digital override tablet that Mr. Sterling’s tech team had pre-programmed for the warehouse’s electronic locks.

Doctor Harrison quickly secured Clara’s mobile medical rig, locking the wheels of the stretcher-style seat they had improvised in the back of the car. "Clara has to stay in the vehicle. The smoke inhalation combined with her weakened physical state could induce respiratory failure within seconds."

"I’m not staying behind in the dark," Clara insisted, her voice weak but stubborn as she pushed the oxygen mask aside. "The override tablet... it requires a biometric thumbprint from the primary corporate registrant. That’s me. Julian registered the secondary lease under my legal name."

Eleanor looked back at Clara, a flash of grudging respect crossing her face. Without another word, Eleanor unlatched the heavy car door and stepped out into the biting wind and falling ash, shielding her face with the sleeve of her ruined wedding dress.

The heat radiating from the burning warehouse was intense, baking the pavement and crackling loudly as wooden beams began to collapse inward. Through the smoke, two masked figures in tactical black gear could be seen hastily loading heavy metal briefcases into the back of a matte-black utility van parked near the loading dock.

"They haven't destroyed the master drives yet," Eleanor whispered into her collar microphone, maintaining an open audio link with Doctor Harrison inside the armored car. "They're trying to salvage the offshore financial records for themselves."

Eleanor kept low to the ground, utilizing the cover of rusted shipping containers as she advanced toward the loading dock. The acrid smell of burning plastic and gasoline stung her throat, but she pressed forward, her mind entirely focused on the objective.

Suddenly, a heavy iron boot crunched on gravel just behind her left shoulder. Before Eleanor could pivot, a gloved hand clamped over her mouth, and a cold steel barrel pressed firmly against the side of her neck.
