Chapter 10 - The Armored Drive

The heavy doors of the vintage armored Mercedes glided shut with a satisfying, muffled thud, sealing the interior against the chaotic noise of the estate. Mr. Sterling stood by the reinforced steel door of the subterranean garage, giving a sharp nod to the driver before stepping back into the shadows of the mansion.
Eleanor sat in the passenger seat, her pearl crown removed and resting safely in the console compartment, though her white lace wedding gown remained dusty and stained at the hem. In the back seat, Clara lay across the wide leather cushions, her breathing regulated by an oxygen mask that Doctor Harrison had carefully fitted over her face.
"Heart rate is holding steady at one-ten," Doctor Harrison reported, his fingers dancing across a portable vital-signs monitor resting on his knees. "The nerve block is numbing the lower contraction pain, but don't expect miracles. Every bump in the road is going to feel like a shockwave."
The driver shifted the heavy vehicle into gear, and the armored car surged forward, gliding silently up the concrete ramp and out into the twilight streets of the city. The sky above was a bruised palette of deep purple and charcoal gray, threatening a heavy rainstorm that matched the grim tension inside the cabin.
"How far to Zone Four?" Eleanor asked, keeping her eyes fixed on the rain-slicked asphalt visible through the reinforced windshield.
"Twelve miles," the driver replied evenly, navigating the winding suburban boulevard with practiced precision. "If we take the industrial bypass, we can avoid the evening commuter traffic, but the roads are narrow and poorly lit."
"Take the bypass," Eleanor commanded without hesitation. "We need to beat the federal tactical teams to the safe house. If the feds arrive while those mercenaries are still burning the building, there will be a shootout, and any evidence left behind will be classified and buried under national security seals."
Clara shifted weakly on the back seat, her muffled voice escaping from behind the oxygen mask. "Eleanor... why are you risking your life for me? An hour ago, I was the woman who had stolen your husband. You held a knife to my face."
Eleanor didn't turn around immediately. She stared at her own reflection in the side window, watching the blurred city lights streak past in the gathering darkness.
"Julian stole three years of my life with lies, Clara. But he stole your future with premeditated malice," Eleanor said softly, her voice steady and deliberate. "I hate what you did with him. But I respect that you had the courage to walk away when you realized the depth of his evil. We are both victims of the same monster. And monsters deserve to be eradicated completely."
Doctor Harrison checked the intravenous drip, offering Clara a reassuring nod. "She’s right, Clara. In this mess, loyalty isn't about who stood at the altar first. It’s about who is willing to walk through the fire to find the truth."

As the armored Mercedes accelerated down the desolate industrial bypass, the radio crackled to life with an unencrypted police scanner frequency, broadcasting an urgent dispatch about an explosion reported at a commercial warehouse in Zone Four.
