Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the meticulously manicured lawn of the Sterling Estate, casting a golden hue over the towering crystal champagne pyramid. Julian stood beside his bride, Eleanor, his black tuxedo immaculate, though a faint sheen of sweat dampened his collar. Just yards away, the pristine white reception tables hummed with anxious whispers.
Clara stood frozen near the edge of the terrace, her beige off-the-shoulder maternity dress contrasting sharply with the chaotic scene. A thin trickle of crimson blood crept from a split in her lower lip, mirroring the jagged edges of the crystal glasses that lay shattered at Eleanor’s feet. Eleanor’s pearl crown caught the light as she gripped the silver wedding knife tighter, her knuckles turning bone-white.
"You absolute coward, Julian!" Clara’s voice shook, cutting through the murmurs of the bewildered guests like a razor blade. She pressed a trembling hand against her visibly rounded belly, her wide, terrified eyes darting from Julian to the gleaming blade in Eleanor’s hand.
"Clara, please, keep your voice down," Julian stammered, taking a desperate half-step backward, completely abandoning the posture of a confident groom. "This isn't the time or the place for any of this madness."
"Not the time?" Clara let out a breathless, choked laugh, her fingers fumbling clumsily with a heavy diamond band on her left ring finger. With a sharp tug, she pulled it free, smearing a droplet of blood onto the precious metal. "You spent the last nine months telling me you were leaving her! You swore this wedding was nothing more than a legal fiction for your father’s corporate merger!"
Eleanor stepped forward, her posture rigid, her lace wedding gown rustling softly against the grass. She didn't look at Julian. Her cold, piercing gaze locked entirely onto Clara.
"Thieves deserve to be punished," Eleanor whispered, her voice carrying an eerie, measured calm that chilled the surrounding air.
"Miss Ella! Put the knife down!" Doctor Harrison shouted, his white medical coat billowing as he sprinted past the paralyzed catering staff, his hands raised in a placating gesture.
The crowd gasped in unison, a wave of collective horror rippling through the wealthy elite. Eleanor tilted her head, the silver blade hovering mere inches from Clara’s pale cheek.

Before Doctor Harrison could reach them, Clara’s phone buzzed violently in her clutch. The screen lit up, displaying a live bank transfer notification and a text message from an unknown number containing Julian’s signature confession.
