Chapter 8: The Confrontation

The morning of the custody hearing arrived, cold and gray. The county courthouse was surrounded by media vans and curious onlookers.

Inside the grand courtroom, Eleanor sat at the plaintiff's table, wearing a dark navy suit, looking pristine and confident. Her high-powered attorney, Mr. Sterling's former corporate lawyer, sat beside her, smiling smugly.

Across the aisle sat Ethan, wearing a sharp black suit, holding Sarah’s hand tightly. Sarah looked elegant in a dark green dress, her chin held high despite the terrifying environment. Leo was staying safely at home under the watchful eye of Marcus and a security team.

The judge, a stern woman with sharp grey eyes named Judge Adams, banged her gavel. "We are here to review the emergency petition filed by Mrs. Eleanor Sterling regarding the guardianship of minor child Leo Sterling."

Eleanor’s lawyer stood up. "Your Honor, my client seeks to protect the legacy and well-being of her late husband's grandson. The child's mother, Sarah Miller, has a documented criminal history involving grand theft—"

"Objection, Your Honor," Ethan’s lawyer stood up smoothly. "The petitioner is presenting false context. We have new evidence to present regarding the nature of that arrest."

Judge Adams raised an eyebrow. "Proceed."

Ethan’s lawyer signaled to the back of the courtroom. The heavy wooden doors swung open, and Victoria stepped inside, accompanied by Detective Rita Vance.

Eleanor turned around, her face instantly draining of color. "What is she doing here?" she whispered frantically to her lawyer.

Victoria walked down the aisle, her head bowed, and took the witness stand. After being sworn in, Ethan’s lawyer approached her.

"Ms. Victoria," the lawyer said. "Please tell the court about the events of June 14th, seven years ago, regarding Miss Sarah Miller."

Victoria swallowed hard, glancing briefly at Eleanor, who was glaring at her with pure venom.

"Seven years ago..." Victoria’s voice cracked, but she continued. "Mrs. Eleanor Sterling ordered me to place her diamond necklace into Sarah Miller's locker. She then had me call the police to report a theft. Mrs. Sterling wanted Sarah discredited and removed from the city because... because Sarah was pregnant with Ethan Sterling's child."

A collective murmur gasped through the gallery. The judge hammered her gavel for order.

"Do you have proof of this coercion?" the judge asked sharply.

"Yes, Your Honor," Victoria said, pulling an old flash drive from her purse. "I recorded the phone calls where Mrs. Sterling gave me those orders, as insurance to protect myself. I also have documents showing Mrs. Sterling paid off the investigating officer to ensure the charges were filed."

Eleanor slammed her hands on the table, standing up. "She's lying! This bitter former employee is trying to ruin me!"

"Sit down, Mrs. Sterling!" Judge Adams barked, her eyes flashing with anger. "One more outburst and I will hold you in contempt!"
