Chapter 5: The Gathering Storm

The quiet harmony of the Sterling estate was shattered three days later when a fleet of black SUVs pulled up to the front gates.
Ethan was in his home office, teaching Leo how to play chess, when Marcus rushed in without knocking.
"Sir, we have a situation," Marcus said, his face grave. "Eleanor is at the gate. And she brought the press."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. He stood up calmly, placing a hand on Leo's shoulder. "Stay here with your mother, Leo. I'll be right back."
"Is it the bad lady?" Leo asked, his hazel eyes wide with apprehension.
"She can't hurt us," Ethan reassured him. "Trust me."
Ethan walked down the grand staircase and opened the massive front doors. Outside, flashing lights from news cameras cut through the morning fog. A dozen reporters were shouting questions over the gate, while Eleanor Sterling stood at the front, dressed in a pristine white fur coat, accompanied by two high-profile family lawyers.
"Ethan!" Eleanor called out, her voice amplified by the reporters' microphones. "Open these gates! I am here as the executor of the Sterling Trust to protect this family from extortion!"
Ethan walked down the stone steps, his expression unreadable. Marcus opened the small pedestrian gate just enough for Ethan to step through, flanked by his own security team.
"Eleanor," Ethan said smoothly, his voice cool and composed. "You're trespassing."
"I am saving this family!" Eleanor declared dramatically for the cameras. "I have just been informed that a woman—a former servant with a criminal record—has infiltrated this house and is attempting to palm off an illegitimate child as a Sterling heir to steal the estate!"
The reporters erupted into a frenzy of questions, camera shutters clicking like a swarm of locusts.
"Is it true, Mr. Sterling?"
"Is there an illegitimate heir?"
"Are you being blackmailed?"
Ethan didn't flinch. He looked past the reporters, straight into Eleanor's cold, calculating eyes. He knew what she was doing. She wanted to create a public scandal so severe that the board of directors would force Ethan to step down as CEO, leaving her in control of the company.
"Sarah Miller is not an extortionist," Ethan said clearly, his voice carrying effortlessly over the noise. "She is the woman I love. And the child inside this house is my legal, legitimate son and sole heir."
A collective gasp went through the crowd of journalists. Eleanor’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second.
"Do you have proof?" a reporter shouted.
"A DNA test was completed yesterday," Ethan replied, pulling a sealed envelope from his jacket pocket and holding it up for the cameras. "The results are ninety-nine point nine percent conclusive. Leo Sterling is my son. And any attempt to slander him or his mother will be met with the full force of my legal team."
Eleanor took a step back, her face twisting in rage. She hadn't expected Ethan to move so fast, nor had she expected him to embrace the boy publicly without shame.
"This isn't over, Ethan," Eleanor hissed quietly so the microphones wouldn't catch it. "A bastard boy won't hold up in court when I reveal who his mother really is."

"Try me, Eleanor," Ethan whispered back. "Because while you were planning this circus, my lawyers were digging into your offshore accounts. You have five seconds to leave my property before I have Marcus arrest you for corporate fraud."
Eleanor’s face paled. She turned on her heel and retreated to her SUV, leaving the reporters scrambling for answers as Ethan turned and walked back into the safety of his home.
