Chapter 1: The Gathering Storm

The corridor of the Sterling estate was enveloped in an oppressive silence, broken only by the rhythmic, agonizing sobs of Sarah. She knelt among the shattered porcelain and bruised white petals, her trembling fingers attempting to gather the pieces of a life she felt had been irrevocably ruined.

Ethan stood in the doorway, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the room. His jaw was set, and his hazel eyes—usually masked behind a veil of corporate coldness—burned with a quiet, dangerous fury. Beside him, little Leo held tightly to his hand, his small fingers offering an anchor of pure, unadulterated truth.

"Get Victoria downstairs. Now," Ethan commanded, his voice barely above a whisper, yet carrying the weight of an inescapable verdict.

The young footman, standing near the end of the hall, nodded curtly and hurried away.

Ethan stepped into the room, his leather shoes crunching softly against a stray fragment of ceramic. He bypassed the mess and knelt down beside Sarah. For years, he had known her as the quiet, efficient maid who kept the west wing spotless. But looking at her now—her hair disheveled, her hands bleeding slightly from a sharp piece of glass—he saw something else. He saw a mother driven to the edge of endurance, protecting her child at all costs.

"Sarah," Ethan said, gently placing his hand over hers to stop her frantic picking. "Stop. You don't have to clean this."

"Mr. Sterling, please," Sarah gasped, her voice cracked with desperation. "I... I accidentally tripped. Ms. Victoria was just trying to maintain discipline. Please don't fire me. Leo and I have nowhere else to go."

"Look at me," Ethan demanded softly.

Sarah raised her eyes, filled with fear and shame.

"Did you break this?" he asked.

She hesitated, her gaze darting to Leo, who was watching from the doorway. Leo shook his head firmly.

"Ms. Victoria pushed the vase, Daddy—" Leo caught himself, biting his lip at the slip of the tongue, but the word echoed in the vast room like a thunderclap. Daddy.

Ethan’s heart gave a violent shudder, but he kept his expression calm. He looked back at Sarah, whose face had gone completely pale. The truth, long buried beneath layers of intimidation and forged records, was beginning to claw its way to the surface.

Heavy footsteps echoed from the marble hallway. Victoria entered, flanked by the footman. Her chest was puffed out, her tailored blazer immaculate, her chin held high with the arrogant assurance of someone who had controlled the Sterling household for over two decades.

"Mr. Ethan," Victoria said, adjusting her golden brooch. "I apologize for this disturbance. The new maid has proven exceptionally clumsy today. I was just about to escort her and her son off the property to maintain the estate's standards."

Ethan slowly stood up, turning to face the head housekeeper. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't throw a punch. He simply looked at her with an unnerving, icy clarity.

"Victoria," Ethan said softly. "You’ve worked for my family for twenty-five years."

May you like

"I have, sir. With utmost loyalty," she replied, a smirk playing at the corner of her lips.

"Then you should know," Ethan continued, stepping closer until he towered over her, "that in this house, the only thing I despise more than incompetence... is a liar. Pack your bags. You have ten minutes."
