Chapter 10: Healing

The weeks following the court victory were a whirlwind of transformation. Eleanor’s criminal trial dominated the news, but inside the Sterling estate, the world had slowed down to a peaceful, healing rhythm.
The dark, intimidating atmosphere of the mansion was completely gone. Sarah had rearranged the rooms, filling the long corridors with bright flowers, colorful paintings, and warm light. The staff, no longer living under the tyrannical rule of Victoria, worked with genuine smiles, treating Sarah and Leo with deep respect and affection.
One afternoon, Ethan walked into the garden to find Leo sitting on the grass, attempting to build a small wooden birdhouse with a set of toy tools.
Ethan sat down beside his son on the soft grass, taking off his suit jacket and rolling up his sleeves. "Need some help, chief?"
Leo looked up, a bright grin spreading across his face. "The roof keeps falling off, Daddy."
"Let's see," Ethan smiled, taking the small piece of wood. "A good roof needs a strong foundation. Just like a house... or a family."
Together, father and son worked on the birdhouse, their hands covered in wood glue and sawdust. As they worked, Ethan watched the boy's expressions—the way his hazel eyes concentrated, the proud smile whenever a piece fitted correctly. He realized how much of himself he saw in Leo, but more importantly, he saw Sarah's kindness and resilience.
Sarah watched them from the porch, holding a tray of lemonade. She felt a warmth in her chest that she hadn't felt in seven long years. The constant knot of anxiety in her stomach had finally vanished. They were safe.
"Looks like a masterpiece," Sarah said, walking over and handing them glasses of juice.
"Daddy fixed the roof!" Leo boasted proudly, holding up the completed birdhouse. "We're gonna hang it on the big oak tree so the birds have a home!"
"A home," Ethan repeated softy, looking up at Sarah. "That sounds perfect."
That evening, after Leo was fast asleep in his new room—filled with books, toys, and drawings of stars—Ethan took Sarah out to the balcony overlooking the estate's vast grounds.
"What are you thinking about?" Sarah asked softly, leaning against the railing beside him.
"I was thinking about how close I came to losing all of this," Ethan admitted, his voice quiet. "If you hadn't taken that job... if Leo hadn't brought me that photo..."

"Fate has a strange way of fixing things," Sarah smiled gently. "We went through the storm, Ethan. But we made it."
Ethan pulled a small velvet box from his pocket and held it out to her. Sarah’s breath caught in her throat.
