THE SILVER MARK OF BETRAYAL / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8

Midnight draped the Manhattan financial district in shadows, casting long, eerie shapes across the glass facades of skyscrapers. A sleek black town car idled quietly in an alleyway half a block away from the Swiss Depository building. Inside, Julian and Chloe watched the entrance through the tinted windows.

"Are you sure about this?" Chloe whispered, clutching the collar of her dark trench coat.

"Positive," Julian replied, keeping his eyes locked on the heavy security doors of the depository. "Marcus’s assistant confirmed he canceled his morning meetings tomorrow. That means he’s planning to retrieve the ledger tonight and skip the country. He’s running."

As if on cue, a silver luxury sedan pulled up directly in front of the depository. Marcus Vance stepped out, flanked by two private security guards in dark suits. He looked paranoid, constantly glancing over his shoulder as he hurried toward the entrance.

"He’s going in," Julian said, shifting the car into gear. "Stay here in the car, Chloe. Lock the doors."

"No," Chloe said, unbuckling her seatbelt. "I’m coming with you. I need to see his face when we take back what’s ours."

Julian started to argue, but seeing the fierce, unyielding determination in her eyes—a look he realized was distinctly inherited from their father—he nodded. "All right. Stay close to me. No heroics."

They slipped out of the town car, moving silently through the damp night air, using the concrete pillars of the portico for cover. Inside the lobby of the depository, the security guards were checking Marcus’s credentials with the night receptionist. Julian and Chloe slipped through the revolving doors just as they locked into place behind a departing courier.

The marble lobby echoed with the quiet hum of high-security servers. Marcus was already stepping into a private biometric elevator that led down to the high-yield vault levels.

"We need to cut him off at the sub-level," Julian whispered, pulling Chloe toward a service stairwell marked Authorized Personnel Only.

They descended the concrete stairs in the dim emergency lighting, their footsteps muffled by rubber treads. By the time they reached the sub-level corridor, the heavy steel doors of the vault were already open. Marcus stood inside a private viewing booth, holding a thick, leather-bound ledger while his guards stood watch outside the glass partition.

Julian didn't hesitate. He stepped out from the stairwell corridor, his voice cutting through the sterile quiet of the vault room.
