Chapter 10

The wailing siren reverberated off the reinforced steel walls of the vault, turning the sterile depository into a flashing red cage. Julian slammed the leather ledger shut, grabbing Chloe by the arm.
"We need to move, now!" Julian shouted over the deafening noise.
Marcus scrambled toward the exit, but Julian backhanded him across the face, sending the older man crashing into a stack of safety deposit boxes. "Stay down," Julian snarled, before pulling Chloe toward the service stairwell.
They burst back into the corridor, but the escape route was blocked. Three heavy-set men in tactical gear were pouring out of the elevator shaft, blocking the exit to the surface. Their black uniforms bore no insignia, and their faces were half-obscured by ballistic masks.
"Back up!" Julian yelled, shoving Chloe behind him as he scanned the room for alternate routes.
One of the operatives raised a suppressed firearm, aiming it directly at Julian’s chest. The red laser dot danced across Julian’s dark suit jacket. Time seemed to slow down to an agonizing crawl. Chloe clutched her silver bracelet, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She refused to lose her brother the moment she had just found him.
With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Chloe lunged sideways, grabbing a heavy utility cart loaded with mail crates and shoving it forward into the path of the operatives. The cart slammed into their legs just as the gunman pulled the trigger. The suppressed bullet went wide, shattering a glass display case with a loud pop.
"Move!" Julian screamed, grabbing her hand as they bolted down a secondary maintenance corridor marked for facility plumbing.
They sprinted through a maze of concrete tunnels, the heavy boots of the operatives echoing behind them like the footsteps of a relentless predator. The air grew damp and metallic as they descended deeper into the subterranean sub-basements of the financial district, running blindly toward the old underground steam tunnels that connected the older Manhattan skyscrapers.
Julian shoved open a heavy iron maintenance door, pulling Chloe into the steaming darkness of the utility tunnels. They scrambled over rusted pipes and through narrow passages, the distant shouts of their pursuers fading slightly behind the hiss of escaping steam.
They finally collapsed against a damp concrete wall in a forgotten junction beneath Broadway, both of them breathing heavily, gasping for oxygen in the thick, humid air.
"Are you... are you okay?" Julian asked between ragged breaths, his hands frantically checking Chloe for injuries.
"I'm fine," Chloe whispered, wiping soot and sweat from her forehead. She looked down at her wrist, where the silver ornate bracelet still gleamed defiantly in the dim yellow glow of a single overhead bulb. "They're not going to stop, are they, Julian? Even if we have the ledger."
May you like
"No," Julian said grimly, his face hardening in the dim light. "They won't stop because as long as we're alive, we are a walking confession to murder and treason. But neither will we."
