Chapter 12

The grand chandeliers of the Plaza Hotel ballroom cast a dazzling, aristocratic glow over hundreds of guests dressed in black-tie attire and designer gowns. The string quartet played a soft, classical waltz that drifted across the polished marble floor, masking the palpable anxiety humming beneath the surface of the elite crowd.

The heavy mahogany double doors swung open, and all conversation abruptly died.

Julian Sterling stepped into the ballroom, immaculate in a tailored dark tuxedo, his silver ornate bracelet catching the crystal light. But it wasn't Julian who commanded every eye in the room—it was the woman walking beside him.

Chloe wore a breathtaking, deep emerald silk evening gown that contrasted sharply with her red hair, which was now pinned up in an intricate, elegant braided crown. Around her neck hung a simple diamond pendant, but on her right wrist, gleaming with unmistakable defiance, was the silver ornate bracelet with its upside-down 'C' monogram. She walked with the poise and grace of a queen reclaiming her throne, leaving behind every trace of the terrified maid who had spilled champagne just two nights prior.

At the far end of the room, standing near the dais, Eleanor Vance froze. Her champagne glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the floor with an identical, haunting echo to the night it all began. Beside her, Marcus Vance—his face still bearing the faint bruise from Julian’s fist—turned white as a sheet, backing away instinctively toward the exit.

Julian and Chloe stopped at the center of the ballroom, the sea of wealthy elites parting around them like water before a warship.

Eleanor recovered her composure first, her face twisting into a mask of pure, venomous rage as she stormed across the polished floor toward them, her diamond earrings swinging violently.

"How dare you!" Eleanor hissed, her voice loud enough to carry across the silent room. "You disgusting little fraud! Security! Get these animals out of my sight before I have them thrown in prison!"

Not a single security guard moved. They stood frozen near the exits, having already received hurried phone calls from their corporate handlers warning them not to touch the Starlings.

Julian stepped forward, shielding Chloe slightly, though she stood tall and unyielding on her own.

"Save your breath, Eleanor," Julian said, his voice ringing out crystal clear across the ballroom. "The party is over."
