Chapter 6

Marcus Vance didn't flinch, even with Julian’s hands gripping his lapels. A slow, unsettling smile spread across the older man’s face as he looked past Julian’s shoulder directly at Chloe.
"You can threaten me all you want, Julian," Marcus wheezed, adjusting his collar as Julian finally released him with a disgusted shove. "But breaking my company won't give you back what you lost. And more importantly, it won't protect your sister from the people I answered to."
Julian stepped defensively back in front of Chloe. "What are you talking about? You acted alone out of greed."
"Greed?" Marcus laughed, a hollow, bitter sound. "Greed is amateur hour. Do you really think a small-time partner could orchestrate the liquidation of the Sterling estate without backing? Your father was playing in deep waters, Julian. He borrowed capital from syndicates that don't file paperwork with the state. When he tried to back out, the fire wasn't my idea—it was a warning message. I just capitalized on the ash."
Chloe felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. The conspiracy wasn't just a local corporate hostile takeover; it was tied to something far darker and more dangerous.
"Name names, Marcus," Julian demanded, his voice dangerously quiet. "Who backed you?"
"I give you a name, and we both sign our death warrants," Marcus replied, brushing dust off his suit jacket. "Instead of tearing each other apart, maybe we should look at a mutually beneficial arrangement. You want the truth, Julian? I have the ledger. Every financial transfer, every communication, every name. But I keep it locked in a secure vault off-site. You drop the forensic audit on my division, and I’ll hand over the key."
"You expect me to negotiate with the man who destroyed my family?" Julian spat.
"I expect you to be pragmatic," Marcus countered smoothly. "You have your sister back. Do you want to spend the rest of your life waging a war you can't win, or do you want to keep her safe?"
Marcus turned toward the door, pausing with his hand on the brass knob. "Think about it, Julian. You have twenty-four hours before the ledger goes public to whoever is hunting for it. And trust me, they already know your sister is back in New York."

With that, Marcus opened the door and walked out, leaving the heavy silence of the office to settle back over Julian and Chloe.
