Chapter 11

The steam tunnels led them several blocks away to an abandoned subway maintenance station that Julian had secretly acquired years ago as part of his private contingency assets. It was dry, secure, and completely off the grid. A single heavy-duty generator hummed quietly in the corner, powering a makeshift command center equipped with encrypted satellite comms and emergency supplies.
Chloe sat on a metal cot, wrapping a woolen blanket around her shoulders while Julian worked furiously at the terminal, plugging the ledger’s data into an encrypted offline drive.
"I’ve uploaded the financial transfers to an automated dead-man’s switch," Julian said, his eyes glued to the scrolling green code on the monitor. "If my heart rate monitor drops or I don't input a security code every six hours, the entire ledger—every shell company, every syndicate tie, every name including Marcus and Eleanor—gets broadcasted directly to the Department of Justice, Interpol, and every major news outlet in the country."
Chloe let out a shaky breath, watching the blinking cursor on the screen. "So they can't touch us without blowing up their own world."
"Exactly," Julian said, turning away from the screen and walking over to sit beside her on the cot. He reached out, gently touching the silver bracelet on her wrist. "They thought they could bury our family in ash twenty years ago. They thought we were ghosts. But ghosts have a way of haunting the people who made them."
"What do we do next?" Chloe asked, looking up into her brother’s tired, resolute eyes. "We can't hide down here forever."
"We don't have to," Julian replied. "With this ledger, we have the leverage to force a public reckoning. But we need to play it smart. We need to draw Eleanor and Marcus out into the open where they can't hide behind hired guns or corporate lawyers. We need to hit them where it hurts most: their public reputation and their control over the board."
"The annual shareholders' gala," Chloe realized, a sudden spark of determination flashing in her eyes. "Tomorrow night. The Vance Foundation is hosting its hundredth-anniversary ball at the Plaza. Every major investor, politician, and media mogul in New York will be in attendance."
Julian stared at her, a mixture of shock and reluctant admiration on his face. "That’s suicide, Chloe. Eleanor will have security crawling all over the ballroom."
"Not if we go as guests," Chloe said softly, a daring smile touching her lips. "Or better yet... not if we walk in through the front doors holding the proof of everything they’ve stolen."
Julian leaned back, letting out a low whistle. A slow, genuine smile broke through the tension on his face. For the first time in twenty years, he looked less like a corporate warlord and more like an older brother ready to take on the world for his sister.

"Alright," Julian said quietly. "Let’s crash their party."
