Chapter 13

Eleanor stopped dead in her tracks, her chest heaving beneath her beige satin gown as she glared at Julian and Chloe with pure hatred.

"You think walking in here dressed like royalty changes anything?" Eleanor sneered, her voice shrill and desperate. "You’re nothing. A couple of orphaned brays playing dress-up in stolen clothes. Security, are you deaf? Remove them!"

"They aren't deaf, Eleanor. They’re smart," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the entrance of the ballroom.

Marcus Vance pushed his way through the frozen crowd, looking defeated, his suit rumpled, his eyes haunted by the realization that his empire was gone. Behind him walked three federal agents in dark suits, their badges gleaming under the chandelier lights.

Eleanor spun around, grabbing her husband by the lapel. "Marcus! What is the meaning of this? Why aren't they in cuffs?"

"Because the cuffs are for us, my dear," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking as he looked at the federal agents.

Julian stepped forward, holding up a sleek tablet device that began casting a live-streamed data feed onto the massive projection screens flanking the ballroom stage. Within seconds, the scrolling financial ledgers, the offshore shell companies, the corporate bribe receipts, and the digitized records of the estate fire investigation filled the screens in glaring, high-definition detail.

Gasps rippled through the gathered elite. Investors whispered frantically, reporters scrambled to pull out their phones, and several prominent board members turned their backs on the Vances in absolute disgust.

"Twenty years ago," Julian’s voice boomed through the sound system, steady and resonant, "these people burned my family’s estate to the ground, stole my infant sister, and buried our legacy in ash to steal a corporate empire. They thought they had won. They thought we were erased."

Julian turned, looking directly at Chloe, then back out at the horrified crowd. "But truth doesn't burn. It waits."

The federal agents stepped forward, placing cold steel handcuffs around Marcus Vance’s wrists. Eleanor let out a strangled cry of rage and denial, lunging forward with her fingernails bared toward Chloe, ready to scratch out the face of the girl who had destroyed her world.

Before Eleanor’s nails could reach her, two female federal agents intercepted her, pinning her arms behind her back with practiced efficiency. The metal cuffs clicked shut around Eleanor’s wrists, silencing her screams as she was dragged backward across the very marble floor where she had once demanded Chloe grovel.

The ballroom descended into a heavy, stunned silence. The music had stopped entirely. Julian reached out, taking Chloe’s hand, feeling the solid, unbreakable weight of their matching silver bracelets locked together against the cold night air.
