Chapter 1

The crystal flute slipped from Eleanor Vance’s manicured fingers, shattering against the marble floor into a thousand glittering shards. The amber champagne pooled across the beige satin of her expensive gown, soaking the heavy fabric with sticky warmth. Eleanor gasped, her face contorting into an ugly snarl as she glared at the young woman standing frozen before her.
"You clumsy fool! Look at this mess!" Eleanor shouted, her voice cutting sharply through the sophisticated murmur of the high-society gala.
Chloe dropped her gaze, the silver tray of appetizers shaking violently in her trembling hands. Her hair, usually pinned neatly into a red bun, had come loose at the temples, damp with nervous sweat. She wore the standard black maid dress with its crisp white collar and apron, a uniform that instantly rendered her invisible to the wealthy elites populating the grand living room. Until this exact second, she had been just another piece of moving furniture, someone to dodge or ignore. Now, she was the center of an excruciatingly public humiliation.
"I’m so sorry, ma’am! It was an accident!" Chloe cried out, tears spilling instantly over her lashes. Her lips parted in a silent plea for grace, her shoulders heaving with genuine, unscripted terror.
Eleanor raised a ring-heavy hand, her palm cocked back with venomous intent, ready to deliver a stinging physical lesson to the terrified girl. The surrounding guests turned, some whispering behind velvet-gloved hands, others watching with cold, predatory amusement. Before Eleanor’s hand could connect with Chloe’s flushed cheek, a heavy, muscular arm shot forward out of the crowd, intercepting the blow with practiced ease.
Julian Sterling grabbed Chloe’s right wrist, his fingers curling around the delicate bone with an urgency that startled everyone present. His dark suit jacket shifted, revealing the expensive tailoring of a man who commanded boardrooms with a single glance. But Julian wasn't looking at Eleanor’s outraged face. His entire world narrowed down to the silver ornate bracelet resting against Chloe’s skin—a piece of jewelry featuring intricate, hand-carved Celtic knots that he hadn't seen in nearly two decades.
The ambient noise of the party seemed to fade into a hollow hum. Julian stared at the silver metal, his breath catching in his throat as old, buried memories violently clawed their way to the surface. The room held its collective breath.
"Where did you get this bracelet?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping to a low, breathless rasp that commanded total silence.
Chloe blinked through her tears, confused and frightened by the intense scrutiny of the handsome stranger. Before she could answer, Julian pulled her into a tight, desperate embrace, burying his face in her shoulder as a tear finally escaped his own eye.

"You’re my long-lost sister," Julian whispered fiercely against her collarbone.
