Chapter 9 - The Unknown Benefactor

The phone in Julian’s hand buzzed violently against his palm. He looked down at the screen, where the unknown number had sent a single, high-resolution photograph alongside a new audio file.
The photo showed a man Julian had never seen before—older, with sharp, hawkish features and piercing gray eyes—standing in front of a private airfield hangar in Geneva.
Julian tapped the play button on the audio file. The speaker in his phone crackled, and a deep, gravelly voice filled the quiet master bedroom.
"Good evening, Mr. Vance. I imagine you are currently looking through Clara’s private ledger in the wall safe," the voice said calmly, carrying an accent that was difficult to place—perhaps Swiss or Austrian.
Julian stepped away from the open safe, his eyes darting toward the bedroom door. "Who is this? How do you have this line?"
"I am someone who has been watching Clara’s little enterprise unravel for quite some time," the voice replied smoothly. "Marcus was merely a symptom of a much larger disease. Clara is a professional grifter, Mr. Vance. She didn't just infiltrate your life; she was assigned to it by an international syndicate that specializes in corporate hostile takeovers via strategic marriages."
Julian’s grip on the phone tightened until his knuckles turned white. "If you know so much, why didn't you warn me sooner?"
"Because proof is everything in your world, Julian. Had I told you a year ago, you would have protected your wife and dismissed me as a jealous rival," the voice noted with a touch of dry amusement. "Instead, you now have the ledger, Marcus is in federal custody, and Clara is facing decades behind bars. But there is one detail you have not yet discovered in that safe."
Julian turned back toward the open steel door of the wall safe. The ledger lay on the shelf, but underneath it sat a small, flat metallic object he had initially mistaken for a false bottom.
"What detail?" Julian asked, his voice low and cautious.
"Look beneath the ledger, Mr. Vance. There is a secondary compartment. Inside, you will find the real reason Clara tried to get rid of your daughter tonight."

Julian reached his hand into the dark recess of the safe, his fingers brushing against a cold metallic latch. He pressed it upward. A hidden drawer slid open with a soft metallic click, revealing a single document wrapped in a plastic evidence sleeve and a heavy gold key.
