Chapter 2 - The Fracture Beneath the Surface

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat as the audio recording looped a second time.
"You ruined everything the very day you were born," the speaker repeated, Clara’s distinct voice hanging in the air like a rotting corpse.
Clara backed away, her spine hitting the cold venetian plaster of the wall. Her chest rose and fell rapidly beneath the stained silk dress. "It’s deepfake technology," she stammered, her voice losing its previous theatrical volume. "Julian, you know the tech industry. People can manipulate audio. Elena has access to my voice data from the smart home logs. She set me up!"
Elena stepped back, clutching her gray uniform skirt. "Sir, I don't even know how to code a VCR, let alone fake a security file," she whispered, her voice steady despite her fear.
Julian ignored them both for a agonizing moment. He looked down at his daughter, Lily, who had finally quieted down, burying her face into the black fabric of his shirt. The pink bodysuit was still damp from her earlier tears. Julian gently kissed the top of the baby’s head, feeling the soft tufts of dark hair.
"Clara," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "The local cameras don't use cloud processing. They store raw audio locally on the encrypted hard drive in the basement server room. There is no cloud to hack. There is no remote spoofing."
Clara’s pupils dilated. She swallowed hard, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly. The veneer of her pristine socialite life was cracking down the middle, revealing the rot underneath.
"Julian, please," Clara whispered, stepping forward and reaching out a trembling hand. "Let’s go into the study. We can talk about this like adults. Don’t listen to the hired help."
"Don't you dare call her that," Julian snarled, finally losing his restraint. He stepped forward, towering over his wife. "Elena saved our daughter's life while you were trying to kill her. Or worse, throw her off the balcony."

Before Julian could demand answers about the server room logs, the smart home panel beeped loudly. A red alert banner flashed across the screen, indicating that the basement server room door had just been opened from the inside.
