Chapter 10 - The True Identity of Lily

Julian pulled the sealed plastic pouch out of the hidden compartment. The fluorescent overhead light of the master bedroom caught the faded text of the document inside: an original, certified birth certificate bearing a seal from a hospital in Zurich, dated precisely twelve months ago.

He slipped the document out of the protective sleeve, his eyes scanning the printed names.

The mother's name listed was not Clara. It was Elena Miller.

Julian froze, the paper trembling slightly in his hand. He stared at the name, his mind refusing to process the glaring contradiction. Elena—the forty-five-year-old maid who had worked in his mansion for the past two years, the woman who had drawn a firearm to protect his daughter—was listed as Lily’s biological mother.

The phone in his hand was still connected to the mysterious Swiss caller.

"You're shocked," the deep voice said softly through the speaker. "Understandable. Clara didn't adopt Lily legally. She used corporate leverage, blackmail, and bribery to steal the child from a covert operative who was deep undercover inside her father’s syndicate."

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs. "Elena... Elena is an operative?"

"She was," the caller corrected. "Until she went rogue to protect her own flesh and blood. When Clara’s syndicate found out Elena had infiltrated their inner circle, they forced her into hiding. She took a domestic position in your household just to stay close to her daughter, waiting for the exact moment to expose Clara without putting the baby in the crossfire."

Julian felt the room spinning. Everything he thought he knew about his life, his marriage, and his household was a lie built on layers of espionage and deception.

"If Elena is her mother," Julian whispered, "why didn't she just take Lily and run?"

"Because Clara had legal custody stamped by corrupt judges in three different jurisdictions. Without concrete proof of Clara’s criminal conspiracy, any attempt by Elena to take the child would have resulted in her arrest for kidnapping and the baby being thrown back into the syndicate's foster network."

Before Julian could process the staggering weight of this revelation, a loud knock echoed at the master bedroom door.

Julian pocketed the birth certificate and turned around. The door slowly pushed open, revealing Elena standing in the hallway, her gray maid uniform immaculate, holding a small silver tray with a fresh cup of black coffee.

Elena stopped at the threshold, her dark eyes locking onto the open wall safe and the birth certificate in Julian’s hand.

"I see you found the bottom drawer, Mr. Vance," Elena said quietly, her voice entirely devoid of its previous subservience.
