Chapter 7 - Sirens in the Night

The wail of police sirens cut through the quiet suburban night, growing louder with every passing second until the flashing red and blue lights painted the luxury mansion's marble facade in alternating strokes of color.
Downstairs, heavy boots echoed on the flagstone walkway outside the double front doors. Elena tapped her earpiece, communicating in low, clipped tones with the incoming tactical team.
"Perimeter secure. Suspects detained. Proceed to the main foyer," Elena spoke into the tiny microphone hidden beneath the collar of her gray maid uniform.
Julian stood near the bassinet, looking down at Lily. The baby had finally fallen back into a deep, peaceful sleep, her small chest rising and falling rhythmically beneath the pink bodysuit. He gently brushed a stray curl of hair from her forehead, feeling a profound wave of relief wash over him.
Clara remained slumped on the floor, staring blankly at the flashing lights outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. Her high-status world had collapsed in less than an hour, reduced to a stained silk dress and a pair of discarded shoes.
"Julian," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the heavy pounding of boots on the front porch. "You can't let them take me. Think of the press. It will destroy the family name."
Julian didn't even look down at her. "The family name was destroyed the moment you decided our daughter was an expendable pawn in your financial game, Clara."
The front doors were breached with a crisp, practiced command, and three uniformed police officers swarmed into the grand hallway, weapons drawn and tactical gear rustling.
Marcus was immediately cuffed and hauled toward the exit, his protests drowned out by the harsh metallic click of steel restraints. Two female officers approached Clara, their expressions professional and detached as they helped her to her feet, reading her rights in a low murmur.
As Clara was escorted past Julian, she stopped for a fraction of a second, her dark eyes locking onto his with a strange, chilling intensity.
"You think this is the end of it, Julian?" Clara muttered under her breath just as the officer pulled her forward. "My family owns half the board. You'll never see a dime of the trust."
Julian watched her disappear through the front doors into the flashing night. He took a deep breath, turning to Elena, who was systematically packing away her firearm into a discreet leather pouch.
"Thank you, Agent Miller," Julian said formally.

Elena nodded, her expression softening slightly. "Just doing my job, Mr. Vance. But you might want to check the hidden safe behind the master bedroom painting. Mrs. Vance wasn't just hiding financial documents."
