Chapter 4 - The Betrayal in the Shadows

The man standing by the server rack turned around slowly, the blue light of the terminal reflecting off his wire-rimmed glasses. It was Marcus, Julian’s chief financial officer and supposedly his most trusted corporate advisor.

Julian stopped mid-stride on the concrete steps, his hand resting on the metal handrail. "Marcus? What the hell are you doing in my house at midnight?"

Marcus didn’t panic. He calmly pocketed the flash drive, adjusting the lapels of his expensive tweed jacket. "Julian. I didn't expect you to check the basement logs so soon. Clara must have panicked upstairs."

"You were downloading the accounts?" Julian asked, his voice shaking with a potent mixture of shock and fury.

"I was downloading everything," Marcus corrected smoothly, stepping away from the console. "Your company accounts, your personal offshore holdings, and yes, the digital ownership transfer documents. Clara and I have been partners for a very long time, Julian. Much longer than you and she have been playing happy family."

Julian felt the room tilt on its axis. The betrayal cut deeper than any physical blow. "Clara? You've been working with Marcus?"

"She wanted the money, Julian. You wanted a wholesome family life. It was a mismatch of epic proportions," Marcus said with a cold, corporate smile. "And little Lily? Well, she was becoming an expensive complication. A child complicates trusts, wills, and rapid asset liquidation."

Julian’s fists clenched at his sides. The pieces clicked into place with horrifying clarity: the staged accident in the hallway, the cruel whispers caught on the microphone, the corporate restructuring documents. They had planned to ruin him financially and frame him for negligence, or worse.

"You're not leaving this room, Marcus," Julian said, taking a step down toward the concrete floor.

Marcus chuckled softly, reaching into his jacket pocket. "I wouldn't do that, Julian. Look at the wall monitor behind you."

Julian turned his head slightly. On the auxiliary security monitor, the camera feed showed the upstairs hallway. Elena was standing near the grand staircase holding Lily, but pointing a small, snub-nosed revolver directly at Clara’s temple.
