Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Fall

The marble hallway of the luxury mansion felt chillingly cold under Clara’s bare feet. She stood rigidly in her stained beige silk slip dress, her breathing shallow, her eyes wide with a manic terror that defied logic. High heels lay discarded a few feet away like dropped weapons.

Julian clutched the crying one-year-old baby girl to his chest, his black blazer straining against his broad shoulders. He glared at Clara with a dark, consuming fury.

Elena, the forty-five-year-old maid in her gray uniform, stood frozen against the wall, her hands trembling as she pointed toward the smart home security touchscreen panel.

"Me? I dropped the baby! It wasn't me!" Clara shrieked, her voice cracking with hysterical denial.

Julian stepped forward, shielding the infant. "Hey, boy. Daddy's here now," he murmured to the terrified child before snapping his gaze back to his wife.

"Your wife threw her! You're fired! Get out of here right now!" Clara screamed, pointing a trembling, manicured finger directly at Elena.

Tears streamed down Elena’s weathered face. "Sir, check the cameras!" she cried out, frantically pressing the glass screen of the wall panel.

The screen flickered to life, bathing the hallway in a cold blue light. High-definition footage began to play, showing Clara running down this exact corridor just moments before, her face twisted in rage. Then, the built-in speaker crackled to life, broadcasting a chilling audio clip recorded by the hallway mic.

"You ruined everything the very day you were born," the audio from the panel echoed clearly.

Julian froze. The silence in the hallway became absolute, heavier than the marble beneath them. He slowly turned his head away from the screen, his eyes locking onto Clara with a terrifying, dead calm.
