Chapter 6 - The Confession on the Landing

Julian shoved Marcus hard against the venetian plaster wall next to Clara. The CFO groaned, clutching his bruised shoulder as his wire-rimmed glasses slid crookedly down his nose.
Julian stood chest-to-chest with his wife, who was still huddled on the floor in her ruined silk dress. The air in the hallway was thick with the scent of fear and ozone.
"It's over, Clara," Julian said, his voice flat and devoid of any lingering affection. "Marcus confessed to everything. The offshore accounts, the forged debt documents, and the plot to stage an accident so you could claim custody and liquidate my entire estate."
Clara looked up at her husband, her dark hair tangled around her tear-streaked face. For a fleeting second, her eyes held genuine remorse, but it vanished instantly, replaced by sheer desperation. "Julian, please! I did it for us! For our future! The lifestyle we built—we couldn't sustain it without liquid capital. You were too conservative with the investments!"
"You tried to drop our daughter off a balcony, Clara," Julian spat back, his voice rising in righteous anger. "There is no 'us' anymore. There never really was."
Elena stepped forward, keeping her firearm lowered but ready. She held up the glowing USB flash drive she had retrieved from Marcus’s pocket during the scuffle at the top of the stairs. "The encrypted files are secure, Mr. Vance. Federal authorities have already been pinged through the secure server backchannel. Local police are five minutes out."
Marcus sneered from against the wall, wiping a smudge of dirt off his tweed lapel. "You think the police will save your company, Julian? Without my authorization codes, your liquidity freezes by morning. Your board of directors will tear you apart."
Julian turned his gaze slowly to Marcus, a cold, confident smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Marcus, while you were busy downloading fake assets, the server auto-routed your primary offshore access keys directly to the federal cybercrime division. You just handed them the keys to your entire criminal network."

Marcus’s arrogant expression vanished, replaced by a sudden, terrifying realization. He lunged forward toward the smart home panel, desperate to hit the manual override, but Elena stepped into his path, cold steel gleaming under the hallway lights.
