Chapter 3 - The Intruder in the Basement

The blinking red light on the smart home panel cast an ominous crimson glow over the marble floor. Julian stared at the screen, his grip tightening instinctively around little Lily.

"Who is down there?" Julian demanded, looking between Clara and Elena.

Clara’s face drained of what little color remained. Her eyes darted toward the grand staircase leading down to the lower level. "It’s... it must be the security guard doing his rounds," she said too quickly, her voice pitched an octave higher than normal.

Elena shook her head firmly. "Mr. Vance gave the night-shift security team the evening off at Mrs. Vance’s explicit request, sir. She said she wanted complete privacy for a quiet family dinner."

Julian slowly lowered Lily into Elena’s waiting, cautious arms. The baby let out a soft whimper, but Elena shushed her gently, rocking her against her gray uniform. Julian reached into the interior pocket of his black blazer and pulled out a heavy, cold set of master keys.

"Clara," Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "If anyone is in my house—anyone who shouldn't be—you are going to explain why your voice was threatening our child, and why someone is currently accessing our most secure files."

Clara lunged forward, grabbing the sleeve of his black shirt. "Don't go down there, Julian! You don't understand what you're walking into. It's dangerous!"

Julian ripped his arm away from her grip with a sharp motion. "Dangerous for who, Clara? For you?"

He turned his back on her, his long strides carrying him swiftly toward the basement access door tucked behind the curved staircase. The door stood slightly ajar, a sliver of yellow light spilling out onto the polished hardwood.

Julian gripped the brass doorknob, pushing it open with a soft click. The smell of ozone and damp earth drifted up the stairwell. He descended into the shadows, his footsteps echoing on the concrete steps.

At the bottom of the stairs, the main server rack hummed quietly. But standing directly in front of the open master console wasn't a stranger. It was a man Julian knew all too well, holding a glowing flash drive in his hand.
