Chapter 8 - The Digital Footprint

The sterile fluorescent lights of the federal field office buzzed softly overhead, casting a harsh glow over the metal interrogation table. Elena sat in a rigid plastic chair, her hands folded tightly in her lap. The ruined wedding dress had been replaced by a simple gray blanket provided by a sympathetic female marshal, but the chill inside her bones refused to leave.

Agent Miller placed a thick manila folder on the table between them, sliding a printed transcript across the surface.

“We traced the IP address of the initial whistleblower report filed three weeks ago,” Miller said, leaning back in his chair and watching Elena carefully.

“It wasn't Julian. And it certainly wasn't Marcus.”

Elena stared down at the paper, her heart hammering against her ribs.

“Whose network was it registered to?”

Miller slid a second paper forward, displaying a certified residential property deed.

“It was registered to the private guest house behind your father’s lakehouse. The property where Marcus claimed he stored his business archives.”

Elena’s breath caught in her throat.

“That's impossible. My father hasn't allowed anyone to stay in that guest house since he retired.”

“According to our digital logs, someone accessed the secure terminal every single night at midnight for the past six months,” Miller continued, tapping a finger on the document.

“And based on the encrypted keystrokes, the user had administrative clearance matching your father's personal security profile.”

The door to the interrogation room clicked open, and Julian stepped inside, carrying two paper cups of black coffee. He placed one in front of Elena without a word before taking the seat beside her.

“You didn't tell me about the guest house logs,” Elena said, her voice shaking slightly as she looked at Julian.

Julian took a slow sip of his coffee.

“Because I only received the forensic report twenty minutes ago, while we were still in the banquet hall. Vance wasn't just after your father’s energy patent, Elena. He was looking for the physical hard drives hidden inside that guest house.”

Elena closed her eyes, trying to piece together the terrifying puzzle.

“My father is an honest man. He spent his entire career building green infrastructure to help people, not to be leveraged by criminals.”

“Honest men often make dangerous enemies when they refuse to sell their life's work to the highest bidder,” Julian replied quietly.

“Your father didn't just design a patent, Elena. He uncovered a cartel that has been manipulating municipal power grids across the entire eastern seaboard for a decade.”

Before Elena could process the sheer scale of the conspiracy, the heavy metal door swung open again, and a panicked federal tech specialist rushed into the room, holding a vibrating tablet.

“Agent Miller, you need to see this right now,” the specialist said, his face pale.

“The secure server at the lakehouse just triggered an automated override protocol.”

Miller leaped to his feet.

“An override? Who initiated it?”

The specialist swallowed hard, staring directly at Elena.

“The authentication came from a retinal scan registered under your father's name. But the physical location ping is coming from inside this federal building.”
