Chapter 5 - The Standoff

The metallic click of safety catches being released sounded deafeningly loud in the quiet hall. Elena held her breath, pressing her back firmly against the mahogany table. She looked at Julian, whose jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle twitched violently in his cheek.
“You’re out of your depth, Vance,” Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of fear, carrying a chilling authority that commanded the room.
“Federal marshals are already stationed outside the perimeter. If you fire a single shot, you won't make it two blocks.”
Vance chuckled softly, the sound dry and devoid of warmth.
“Julian, my dear boy, do you really believe I would walk into a lion's den without checking the traps? Your perimeter guards were neutralized ten minutes ago.”
Marcus let out a choked sob from the corner, sliding down the wall until he sat on the floor with his head in his hands.
“Just take the money, Mr. Vance. Take the accounts, take the cars, just leave us alone.”
“Shut up, Marcus,” Elena hissed, stepping out from behind Julian despite his restraining hand. She stood tall, her white wedding dress gleaming in the moonlight, her eyes blazing with a fury that surprised even Vance.
“You want the assets?” Elena demanded, her voice ringing clear and steady across the hall.
“You want the lakehouse, the corporate shares, every last cent Marcus stole? Take them. But you leave my family completely out of this.”
Vance raised an eyebrow, stepping closer with his cane clicking rhythmically against the floor.
“Brave words for a bride abandoned at the altar. But property isn't what my employers are interested in anymore, Miss Reynolds.”
“Then what do you want?” Julian asked sharply, closing the distance between himself and Vance by half a step.
Vance smiled, looking past Julian straight at Elena.
“We want the digital encryption key that your father hid inside the lakehouse vault before he retired. And we know you’re the only one who remembers the combination.”
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. Her father had mentioned a legacy file years ago, claiming it held the blueprints for a revolutionary green-energy patent that could bankrupt several major conglomerates if ever released.
“I don't know what you're talking about,” Elena lied instantly, keeping her expression completely blank.
Vance’s smile vanished. He nodded slightly to the man standing to his left, who raised his weapon and aimed it directly at Marcus's head.
“You have ten seconds to remember, Miss Reynolds,” Vance said coldly.
