Chapter 3 - The Family Secret

Elena froze, her hand hovering over the brass handle of the grand exit doors. The chill of the night air drifted through the heavy wood, but it was nothing compared to the ice flooding her veins. She slowly turned back to face Marcus, whose face had gone terrifyingly pale.
“What did you just say?” Elena asked, her voice dangerously quiet.
“What does my family have to do with your criminal mess?”
Marcus swallowed hard, avoiding her piercing gaze. He looked pleadingly at Julian, as if begging his former business partner to interject, but Julian merely watched with cold detachment.
“When the first audit came up short six months ago,” Marcus began, his voice trembling, “I needed collateral to keep the creditors at bay. I used the title deed to your parents' historic lakehouse as leverage.”
Elena let out a sharp gasp, taking a stumbling step backward.
“You forged their signatures? That property has been in my family for four generations!”
Julian sighed, stepping closer to the table and flipping open the dossier to a heavily tabbed section near the back.
“It’s worse than forgery, Elena. Your father unknowingly signed a quitclaim deed during the holiday dinner last December, believing it was standard tax paperwork for the family trust.”
The betrayal was absolute, crushing every happy memory of her childhood home into dust. Elena looked at Julian, her eyes burning with unshed tears.
“And you knew about this? When did you find out?”
Julian met her gaze steadily.
“I found the draft yesterday while reviewing the asset seizures. I tried to warn you before the ceremony, but you told me I was just being bitter about the past.”
Marcus let out a hysterical laugh, twisting violently against the grip of the groomsmen holding him.
“Oh, spare us the noble act, Julian! You’ve been waiting years for an excuse to tear my life apart so you could step into my shoes.”
Elena ignored Marcus entirely. She walked back to the table, her hands steady now with a cold, terrifying clarity. She picked up the pen resting beside the negotiation documents.
“Where do I sign to void his access to my assets?” Elena asked Julian, ignoring Marcus's frantic protests.
Julian pointed to a dotted line at the bottom of the final page.
“Right here. But signing this means you become the primary witness for the federal prosecutor.”

Elena pressed the pen hard against the paper, ready to write, when the overhead lights in the banquet hall flickered violently and went completely black.
