Chapter 10 - The Confession

The hum of hundreds of server racks filled the room, vibrating through the floorboards as Vance pocketed the small silver flash drive. He looked at Julian, Elena, and the armed agents blocking the doorway with an air of absolute triumph.
“You're too late, Julian,” Vance said smoothly, stepping away from the glowing console.
“The data packet is already encrypted and bouncing through three offshore relays. By the time your precious federal firewall registers the breach, the file will be halfway across the world.”
Agent Miller raised his weapon, stepping into the room with his finger resting just outside the trigger guard.
“Don't move another inch, Vance. You're surrounded by federal marshals. Put your hands behind your back.”
Vance didn't flinch. He slowly raised his hands, but his smile never wavered.
“Arrest me if you must, Agent. But arresting me won't stop what's already in motion. Marcus here was just the spark; the fire is already burning through every major banking and energy institution on the continent.”
Elena looked past Vance toward Marcus, who was slumped in the rolling chair, crying softly with duct tape hanging loosely around his wrists.
“Marcus, look at me,” Elena said, stepping past the agents into the cold server room.
“Did you know what Vance was planning all along? Was the embezzlement just a cover to steal my father's research?”
Marcus lifted his head, his eyes red-rimmed and hollow.
“I needed the money, Elena. They threatened to expose my previous company’s bankruptcy if I didn't help them access your father's network. I didn't mean for it to go this far.”
“You traded my family's legacy to save your own skin,” Elena whispered, the last remaining thread of her affection snapping completely.
“You lied to me from the very beginning.”
Julian stepped up beside Elena, his expression cold and resolute.
“He didn't just lie to you, Elena. Marcus was working with Vance's syndicate before we even met. The entire courtship was orchestrated to get him inside your father's trust.”
Marcus shrank back in the chair, unable to deny the accusation as the federal agents moved in and slapped steel cuffs onto his wrists, dragging him toward the exit.
Vance chuckled softly as he too allowed himself to be cuffed.
“You think you've won a victory today, Miss Reynolds? Check your father's personal tablet. The countdown has already begun.”
As Vance was led away, Elena’s phone buzzed sharply in the pocket of her borrowed blanket. She pulled it out with trembling fingers and stared at the screen, where a video notification from an unknown sender was playing in a continuous loop.

It showed her elderly father sitting in his study at the lakehouse, staring directly into the camera with a look of sheer terror as a masked figure held a gun to his head.
