Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

The seconds stretched into an agonizing eternity as the heavy silence pressed down on the banquet hall. Marcus was trembling uncontrollably, tears streaming down his face as he stared into the dark barrel of the gun pointed inches from his forehead.
“Elena! Do something!” Marcus screamed, his voice cracking with sheer terror.
“Tell him! Give them the key!”
Julian didn't hesitate. In a flash of motion, he grabbed the heavy brass champagne bucket from the side table and hurled it directly at the gunman's arm. The heavy metal struck true, sending the firearm clattering across the marble floor just as a deafening gunshot echoed through the hall, shattering a crystal window high above.
“Move!” Julian yelled, grabbing Elena by the wrist and pulling her behind a massive stone pillar as Vance's men opened fire, riddling the mahogany table with bullets.
Shards of wood and shattered porcelain exploded into the air. Elena kept her head down, her breath coming in ragged gasps as the smell of cordite filled the enclosed space.
“Are you hit?” Julian asked urgently, his hands quickly checking her arms for injuries while keeping his body pressed against the stone.
“I’m fine,” Elena whispered, her mind racing a mile a minute.
“Julian, we can't stay here. They'll kill us all.”
Across the room, the gunfire abruptly stopped as Vance raised his hand to halt his men.
“Impressive reflex, Julian,” Vance called out, his voice echoing smoothly through the smoke-filled hall.
“But you can't protect her forever. The doors are locked, the power is out, and nobody is coming to save you.”
Marcus was crawling frantically across the floor toward the heavy velvet curtains, trying to find a way out, but one of Vance’s men casually stepped on his hand, pinning him to the ground with a boot heel.
“Let him go!” Elena yelled, stepping out from behind the pillar.
“I’ll give you the key. But you let Marcus and Julian walk out of here unharmed.”
Julian grabbed her arm, pulling her back.
“Don't be a fool, Elena. If you give them that key, they won't leave witnesses. They’ll erase everyone in this room.”
“I have no choice!” Elena whispered fiercely, tears finally spilling over her lashes.
“My father built that legacy, and I won't let them kill Marcus over a corporate lie.”
Vance walked slowly toward the center of the room, stopping ten feet away with a calculated smile.
“A touching display of loyalty for a man who betrayed you on your wedding day. Do we have a deal, Miss Reynolds?”
Elena reached up, slowly pulling a small silver locket from around her neck—the very locket her father had given her on her tenth birthday, the one concealing the micro-chip containing the master cipher.
“The key is right here,” Elena said, holding the silver pendant up in the pale moonlight.
“Take it, and let them go.”

Vance extended a gloved hand, his eyes gleaming with anticipation, when the emergency backup generator suddenly roared to life, flooding the hall with blinding white light.
