Chapter 12 - Breach

The rain drummed a frantic rhythm against the roof of the sedan as Julian and Elena crouched behind the vehicle’s heavy engine block. The lakehouse looked hauntingly quiet in the storm, the warm amber glow from the upstairs study casting long, eerie shadows across the wet lawn.
“Listen to me,” Julian whispered, pulling a compact sidearm from his shoulder holster and checking the magazine.
“We go in through the boathouse entrance on the lower level. It bypasses their primary lookout at the front gates.”
Elena gripped the satellite radio tightly in her hand, her heart hammering against her ribs like a caged bird.
“And if they’re already inside the study?”
“Then we deal with them,” Julian replied steadily, meeting her gaze in the dim light.
“Stay directly behind me, keep your head down, and do not make a sound.”
They moved with practiced stealth across the damp grass, slipping through the heavy oak door of the boathouse that opened directly into the stone-lined foundation of the estate. The air inside smelled of lake water, old paper, and ozone.
As they ascended the narrow spiral staircase leading up to the main residential floor, a muffled crash echoed from down the hallway, followed by a sharp, angry voice.
“Where is the physical master backup, old man? You can't code your way out of gravity.”
It was a voice Elena didn't recognize—harsher and more ruthless than Vance’s smooth cadence. It belonged to the true architect of the syndicate.
Julian gestured for Elena to wait by the corner of the hallway, raising his weapon as he peeked around the doorframe into her father’s private study.
Through the crack in the door, Elena saw her father tied heavily to his leather armchair, his white hair disheveled and a bruise forming along his jawline. Standing over him was a tall, imposing man in an expensive dark overcoat, holding a silver thumb drive just like the one Vance had stolen.
“You’ll never get the decryption algorithm to execute, Henderson,” her father wheezed, his voice weak but defiant.
“The code is bound to my biometric signature. Without my clearance, that drive is just a useless piece of plastic.”
The man in the overcoat laughed coldly, raising the heavy butt of a pistol toward her father’s forehead.
“Then it’s a good thing we have ways of harvesting your clearance even after you stop breathing.”
Before the man could strike, Julian kicked the study door wide open with a deafening crash, raising his weapon squarely at the intruder’s chest.
“Drop the weapon, Henderson. It’s over.”
May you like
The man froze, slowly turning his head to look at Julian, then glancing past him to see Elena standing in the doorway with wide, horrified eyes.
