Chapter 7 - The Backup Generator

The blinding glare of the overhead chandeliers instantly flooded the banquet hall, causing everyone to squint and shield their eyes. In that split second of disorientation, the heavy metal doors at the main entrance burst open with a resounding crash.
“Federal Law Enforcement! Drop your weapons!” a voice bellowed through a megaphone.
Vance’s men whipped around, raising their firearms toward the entrance, but before they could fire, a cascade of tactical flash grenades rolled across the marble floor. A series of deafening concussive pops and blinding white flashes filled the room, accompanied by thick clouds of disorienting smoke.
Elena dropped to her knees, covering her ears as shouts, heavy boots, and the sound of scuffling echoed around her. Through the haze, she saw dark-clad federal agents swarming the hall, tackling Vance’s men to the ground with practiced efficiency.
Julian pulled Elena into a tight embrace, shielding her body with his own as debris rained down from the ceiling.
“Stay down, Elena! It’s over, the marshals are here.”
As the smoke slowly cleared, three federal agents pinned Vance against a marble pillar, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. Vance didn't struggle; he simply adjusted his trench coat with a chillingly calm smile, casting one final, lingering look toward Elena.
“You think the federal government protects you, Miss Reynolds?” Vance spoke clearly over the commotion.
“The people I work for wrote the laws you think are keeping you safe.”
An agent immediately shoved Vance toward the exit, cutting off his warning. Marcus was still curled in a ball near the windows, sobbing quietly into his hands until two medics rushed over to pull him up and check him for injuries.
Elena slowly stood up, brushing shattered glass and dust from the hem of her white wedding dress. The dress was ruined—stained with soot, torn at the seams, and smelling of smoke. Just like her marriage.
Julian stepped forward, offering her a clean handkerchief, his expression a mix of relief and lingering tension.
“Are you alright, Elena?”
Elena looked at the handkerchief, then up at Julian’s face. She didn't take it.
“You knew the feds were coming, didn't you?” she asked quietly.
“That's why you stalled. That's why you brought up the embezzlement during the ceremony instead of telling me in private.”
Julian didn't look away. He met her gaze with an unflinching honesty that was almost painful.
“If I had told you in private, Marcus would have fled the country with the remaining assets before the freeze orders could be signed. And you would have spent the rest of your life paying off his debts.”
Elena felt a cold anger replace her shock.
“So you used my wedding as bait? You turned the most important day of my life into a sting operation?”
Before Julian could answer, a senior federal investigator in a sharp dark suit walked up to them, holding an open leather binder.
“Miss Reynolds? I’m Agent Miller. We need you to come down to the federal field office immediately to sign the formal deposition regarding the master cipher.”
Elena looked from the investigator to Julian, realizing her nightmare was far from over.
“I’ll go,” Elena said firmly.
“And I’ll give you every single document you need. But before I answer a single question, Agent Miller, I want to know who ordered the audit that started all of this.”
Agent Miller glanced briefly at Julian before looking back at Elena.

“Actually, Miss Reynolds, the anonymous tip didn't come from Julian. It came from an encrypted terminal registered inside your own home.”
