Chapter 1 - The Broken Vows

The formal banquet hall echoed with an unnatural, suffocating silence beneath the glow of crystal chandeliers. Elena sat alone at the round wedding table, draped in heavy white silk that suddenly felt like a straitjacket. Julian approached with measured steps, his dark grey suit sharp, the white rose boutonniere pinned to his lapel looking like a pale casualty of war. The groomsmen and corporate partners stood like dark statues around the perimeter of the room, watching every micro-expression with predatory detachment.
Julian placed his hand flat on the mahogany table near Elena’s untouched glass of champagne. Without a word of hesitation, Elena pulled the platinum band from her ring finger and dropped it onto the wood. The sharp clink cut through the heavy air.
Looking straight into his eyes, Elena said firmly,
“I’m leaving.”
Julian tightened his jaw, his gaze hardening into a defensive glare.
“You’re overreacting.”
He leaned closer, lowering his voice so the men standing in the shadows wouldn't hear every detail, though they already knew the storm that was coming.
“Your husband may have been taking money from clients, potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
Elena’s breath hitched, her fingers trembling as they brushed against the corner of a heavy leather-bound folder resting near the ring. She pulled the folder toward her, her eyes scanning the first page of forensic accounting logs filled with offshore wire transfers.
“This is insane,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking as the reality of her new life shattered instantly.
“Julian, tell me this is a sick joke. You helped him set up these accounts.”
Julian stepped back, his expression entirely devoid of warmth.
“I audited the firm, Elena. I didn't hide the paper trail. Your beloved husband signed every single fraudulent authorization.”

Before Elena could demand answers about why Julian was delivering this devastating news on her wedding day instead of weeks ago, a heavy oak door at the far end of the banquet hall slammed open with a deafening crash.
