Chapter 9 - The Unknown Sender

The bright screen of Clara’s smartphone flashed aggressively in the dimly lit bridal suite, displaying a single incoming text message from an unrecognized local number. She paused her packing, her fingers hovering over the glass display as a cold chill ran down her spine. The police had just hauled Owen and Evelyn away in handcuffs, yet the lingering sense of danger refused to dissipate. She tapped the notification open, her eyes scanning the brief, ominous string of words displayed against the dark background.

"The arrest was amateur hour. You only caught the scapegoats. Meet me in the east courtyard parking lot in ten minutes if you want to know who really funded the merger, or watch your company’s stock shares crash to zero before the opening bell tomorrow."

Clara stared at the screen in disbelief. Scapegoats? She had personally watched Evelyn swap the documents and listened to Owen gloat about the asset transfer. How could there be someone else pulling the strings behind the scenes?

She walked quickly over to the shattered French doors, looking out toward the courtyard below. Through the glass, she could see the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers illuminating the wet pavement, but beyond the immediate perimeter of the hotel entrance, the shadows of the east parking lot stretched deep and dark beneath the towering oak trees.

"Dad! Marcus!" Clara called out, turning toward the interior door just as her father and cousin walked back into the suite.

"We got them secured in the transport vehicle," Marcus said, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. "The local precinct chief is handling the booking personally. Those two won't be seeing daylight anytime soon."

"They weren't acting alone," Clara said urgently, thrusting her phone toward them so they could read the message on the screen.

Arthur’s face hardened as he read the text, his expression turning grim. "This could be a trap, Clara. It could be one of Owen’s corporate associates trying to salvage whatever leverage they have left before the federal investigators freeze their accounts."

"Or it could be the actual mastermind," Clara insisted, slipping the beaded handbag over her shoulder and checking the safety latch on her tactical holster. "If there’s someone else out there with administrative access to my company’s database, we need to flush them out now before they execute a remote liquidation."

"I’m coming with you," Marcus stated firmly, stepping blocking the doorway. "No arguments, Clara. I’m not letting you walk into a dark parking lot alone."

"Me too," Arthur added, rolling up his sleeves with a determined look in his eyes. "Let’s go see who thinks they can outsmart our family."

The three of them moved quickly through the quiet corridors of the hotel, bypassing the grand ballroom where the wedding guests were still happily mingling, completely oblivious to the dramatic criminal saga unfolding upstairs. They slipped through a side service exit, stepping out into the cool autumn night air of the east courtyard parking lot.

The area was deserted except for a single black sedan parked near the far corner under a flickering overhead streetlamp. The engine was running, its exhaust pipes puffing faint white clouds into the chilly air. As Clara and her family approached, the driver’s side door slowly pushed open, and a figure stepped out from the shadows, holding a familiar leather briefcase.
