Chapter 2 - The Echo of Footsteps

The heavy brass handle rattled with a slow, deliberate mechanical click that echoed loudly inside the quiet, dimly lit bridal suite. Clara froze beneath the dark wooden bed frame, her breath catching tightly in her throat as she pressed her hand over her mouth to silence any sound. Her white wedding gown felt heavy, the fabric bunched up painfully against her knees, restricting her movement. Through the narrow gap beneath the dust ruffle, she watched a pair of black high heels step across the vintage hardwood floor. It was Evelyn. The older woman moved with an unhurried, predatory grace, her burgundy dress swishing softly with every calculated step she took toward the center of the room.
Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. Just moments before, she had witnessed Evelyn sitting on the edge of the mattress, calmly speaking into her phone while pretending to search for the bride. The sheer hypocrisy of the performance made Clara’s stomach churn. Owen’s mother had played the part of the doting, elegant matriarch for months, winning over Clara’s friends and family with warm smiles and expensive gifts. Yet underneath that polished exterior lay a calculated scheme designed to strip Clara of everything she had inherited. The white beaded handbag containing the genuine prenuptial agreement rested innocently on the vanity table just a few feet away from the bed, acting as a silent beacon for the two conspirators.
"She has to be around here somewhere," Evelyn’s voice rang out, sharp and devoid of any maternal warmth. "She isn't answering her phone, and her car keys are still in the downstairs coat closet."
"Check the balcony again," Owen’s voice responded from the doorway, sounding dangerously strained. "If she heard us talking about the asset transfer, she might try to climb down the trellis."
"Let her try," Evelyn scoffed, her footsteps pivoting toward the glass doors leading to the terrace. "Without the original documents authenticated by tonight, the amended trust automatically transfers to your name by sunrise. We just need her signature on the final waiver page, willing or not."
Clara’s fingers tightened around her smartphone. Her father was on the other end of the line, though she had muted the speaker to prevent any sound from escaping. She knew her father was powerful, a seasoned corporate executive who didn't back down from a fight, but facing Owen and Evelyn’s legal traps required more than just anger. It required concrete evidence. And right now, that evidence was sitting exposed on the vanity table, completely within their reach.

Evelyn’s footsteps grew closer to the bed. The burgundy hem of her dress brushed against the wooden floorboards just inches from Clara’s face. Clara closed her eyes, offering a silent prayer that the heavy shadow of the frame would keep her hidden in the darkness. Then, she heard the distinctive sound of a drawer sliding open on the vanity.
