Chapter 10 - The Secret Benefactor

The flickering light of the overhead streetlamp cast long, distorted shadows across the asphalt as the figure stepped fully into view. Clara stopped dead in her tracks, her hand dropping automatically to her side. It wasn't a corporate associate or a hired assassin. It was Julian Vance, her company’s senior vice president of finance and her father’s most trusted long-term financial advisor for over fifteen years.
"Julian?" Arthur stepped forward, his voice a mix of shock and absolute betrayal. "What in God’s name are you doing here? You were supposed to be reviewing the international audit reports in Geneva!"
Julian adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, offering a cool, placid smile that didn't reach his cold, calculating eyes. He didn't look the least bit intimidated by Arthur’s anger or the tactical posture Marcus instantly assumed beside Clara.
"Plans change, Arthur," Julian said smoothly, his voice carrying an eerie calmness that cut through the night wind. "Geneva can wait. When you’ve spent a decade building a corporate empire from the shadows, you learn never to leave your most critical leverage in the hands of amateurs like Owen and Evelyn."
"So you were the one funding their scheme," Clara said, stepping around her father, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the man she had trusted with her corporate accounts since day one of her career. "You gave them the forged templates. You provided the security bypass codes."
"I provided the blueprint, Clara," Julian corrected gently, tapping the leather briefcase he held in his hand. "Owen was merely the instrument, and Evelyn was the distraction. I needed a legal marriage to merge your intellectual property assets into our offshore holding trust without triggering a federal antitrust review. Unfortunately, Owen’s greed and incompetence ruined a five-year strategy in a single afternoon."
"You’re insane, Julian," Marcus spat, stepping forward to close the distance between them. "You’re looking at a federal conspiracy charge that will put you behind bars for the rest of your natural life."
"Am I?" Julian laughed softly, unzipping the leather briefcase and pulling out a thick sheaf of printed documents. He held them up so the dim streetlamp illuminated the top page. "Take a close look at this, Arthur. This is your personal signature on an emergency corporate bailout loan taken out against your primary manufacturing plants three months ago. If I go down, your entire manufacturing sector goes down with me, and your family files for absolute bankruptcy by Tuesday morning."
Arthur’s face drained of all color. He staggered back a step, catching himself against Marcus’s shoulder as the crushing weight of the revelation hit him. Julian had systematically embezzled and leveraged their core assets right under their noses, using forged financial instruments disguised as routine operational loans.
Clara felt a surge of white-hot anger replace her initial shock. She reached into her beaded handbag, her fingers wrapping around the grip of her phone, but before she could activate the police recording app, Julian pulled his own device from his pocket and pressed a single button.

"Before you call your police friends," Julian smiled dangerously, "you might want to check the encryption status of your corporate servers."
