Chapter 1 - Whispers of Betrayal

"Dad… I need you to contact your attorney."
"Clara, honey, what on earth are you talking about? Your wedding reception is downstairs right now. Where is Owen?"
"He’s not downstairs, Dad. He’s up here. And so is his mother. They are planning to dismantle everything I own before the night is even over."
"Clara, slow down. You’re hyperventilating. Did you two have a fight? It’s normal to have cold feet, but—"
"This isn't cold feet, Dad! Listen to me very carefully. I am sitting in the bridal suite right now, hiding under the bed. I heard them talking. They didn’t think I was in the room. They thought I went down to the garden."
"Who, Clara? Who is with Owen?"
"Evelyn. His mother. She’s helping him. They aren't just talking about a divorce, Dad. They’re talking about the prenuptial agreement. The one I signed last week. They had it swapped out."
"Swapped out? That’s impossible. My lawyers reviewed every single clause of that document."
"That’s what I thought too! But Evelyn brought a duplicate copy into the room just a few minutes ago. I watched her from beneath the frame. She handed it to Owen, and they were laughing about how easy it was to fool my family. They’ve altered the asset distribution clause. If we stay married for even twenty-four hours after signing, Owen legally acquires full ownership of my publishing company and my grandfather’s estate."
"That is outright fraud, Clara. That’s a criminal offense."
"I know it is. But right now, outside this door, I hear footsteps approaching the bedroom again. They’re looking for me. They know I have the real copy in my beaded handbag on the vanity, but I managed to grab my phone before I crawled under here. Dad, you need to call Marcus right now. Tell him to meet us at the precinct."
"Stay where you are, Clara. Do not make a sound. I am coming up those stairs right now, and God help anyone who tries to stop me."

Before Clara could warn him that the door was locked from the inside, the heavy brass handle began to slowly turn.
